Default Expired belts in DEs?

A group I instruct with has recently instituted a policy of no expired FIA or SFI belts in DEs. Previously this group, and some other groups I'm aware of, had allowed expired belts in non-competitive events. We've had negative feedback from some of our drivers when they no longer pass tech.

Comments?

I insure HPDE's vehicles all around the country. While you may want to recommend updating I don't think it should be a reason to fail tech. Stock belts don't have dates on them and some of them could be 30+ years old.

Expired belts are just that - expired! If you allow expired belts, what it's next? Expired helmets? Is it tough to send people home with expired belts, helmets, etc?. - of course.

Really? You are going to allow people with potentially 30-40 year old stock seat belts but not 6 year old racing harnesses?

I can see if ANY belt is frayed/damaged it should not be allowed but going on the date for racing belts seems excessive for DEs.

We repeat the "but 50 year old stock belts would be ok?" thread about every 6 months.

Most PCA regions on the east coast, if they bother to look, follow the PCA DE best practices and fail expired belts. At NJMP, the state police show up and give tickets to cars on grid with expired belts.

No, it makes no sense. But we live with it.

speaking of expired belts, I have a set of Sparco six points out of my old track car that are expired, but in good condition....what should I do with them? what are they worth? can I donate to a local PCA/SCCA/NASA club for emergency worker practice?

Sorry, didn't mean to flog a dead horse. This just came up for me and I didn't recall seeing it before. Guess I should or at least search the archives.

I had heard that NJSP also does this for gas can violations.....(wrong color can)

What code is in Motor Vehicle or State/County/Town laws of NJ that they can cite, an non-registered off road vehicle for expired belts?

Do they cite SFI/FIA? Really how can they...Are there laws/codes in the books in NJ regarding expired harnesses?

Things like this make Lime Rock a much more welcoming place....

Oops I realize many registered tracked cars are equipped with harnesses...

Still, what is the violation cited on the ticket?

I never want to hear about California laws again. That is just stupid. Private car on what I would assume a private track at a private event. Apologies if the track is owned by the state, but I've never heard of one. These guys have no other crimes to solve?

Pretty sad if the po po can hassle you on a race track...

Talk about a nanny state, they even regulate lawn mower racing: NEW JERSEY MOTOR VEHICLE RACETRACK REGULATIONS

I wonder of the lawn mower racing rules apply to two neighbors who have an ad-hoc "race" side by side on a Saturday afternoon.

I don't think I could live on either coast as my head would explode.

company I used to work for built one (1) location in NJ. After that they were "No more and never again". The level of BS that has to be waded through and dealt with was off the chart. Something that took one contractor in another state took 4 in NJ.
