Don't mean to beat a dead horse and this had nothing to do with how much I enjoyed the movie but 20% chance of injury/death even in a rain race is also way too high. I'm sure most of the racers didn't die or get injured after every five rain races.

You need to go back and look at the fatality records - they lost a LOT of drivers in the 60s and early 70s.

It's also his perceived odds, not the actual statistical odds. I put those numbers up as Lauda's thought process. He didn't want to race in Germany but did, and bailed from the race in Japan.

4 out of 20 drivers (20%) did NOT die or get injured in every race, on average, rain or not. Instead of water, boulders would have to be falling on the track for the odds to have been that high. Ok, I'm done.

Following Lauda's logic, only one raced exceeded the 20% in his career and that was Japan 1976. Like I said earlier, all the other races were probably a much lower perceived risk.

No, but with 2-3 drivers dying each year, it wasn't far from a 20% chance at any given race that someone was going to be killed. Add in the chances of severe injury (like Lauda's), and the 20% target for any given driver is pretty close.

Saw it for the second time in theaters yesterday... And it was even better the second time.

The way they portrayed Lauda really made him look great compared with Hunt- as it should be.

Liked it ok but that was my generation as a fan so was familiar with most of the events. In the opening when Helmut Koenig was killed at Watkins Glen that happened in the race so Hunt the Shunt didn't run over in civies to take a look. I happened unfortunately to be sitting on the hill above where it happened and without thinking it through took a bunch of pictures with my long lens. Would have liked to see more insertion of race footage rather than the same noisy close ups used to depict the races. Gave it 6 out of 10, same score the wife gave it but she was negative on a few Hunt in action scenes.

I believe that scene actually shows the death of Francois Cevert which occurred in qualifying in 1973.

Not sure have to see the scene again but Cevet landed on top of the Armco and Koenig ran under the end of the Armco barrier. Unfortunately I was there for both events. Just bad luck I guess.
