I don't know the chemistry/physics but I understood that higher octane run on a hot day will eliminate or at least reduce detonation.

Because detonation AKA pre-ignition is often aided by extreme temperatures...and in turn detonation makes the head much hotter. Running higher octane (even if the engine is not set up to benefit from it) hinders/eliminates detonation, which takes a major source of head temps out of the picture.

I run a blend of 93 and 100, especially for races and HOT days. Cool DE day's, 93 is fine. It would be great to find some 93 without Ethanol as well in NJ.
