For this new season, I am putting in a new driver's seat. I really liked my Sparco Pro 2000, but decided that I want something that I can put on the halo when at track. Sparco now makes one that has a removable head protection system so to me it is the best of both worlds.

Anyway, got the medium size one. The seat itself fits well when it comes to the width. However, due to slightly different shell size, I had to buy new side mounts for it. And whether it is the side mount or the seat itself, once I put the seat in the car, I feel I lost an inch or so head room.

Was pretty frustrated with the situation, then I realized that the seat / leg cushions are just velcroed on.. I took them off and instantly feel much better. It is a little bit stiff, but I think it should be okay.

Is that a stupid thing to do or I just got a seat with the wrong size? I really don't want a seat that's wider than this, though, as I think it would be too loose. Maybe this particular model of seat just doesn't fit me as well? (But this is the only model that has the removable head protection) Or customizing seat to fit you is just a fact of life?

lots of people remove the seat cushions both for fit and feel
you can always add a thin sheet of memory foam if it's too hard on yer butt

McMaster-Carr sells Confor (memory) foam in various thicknesses and densities.

I have to take the cushions out of my EVO XL seats in order to feel I am at a correct seating posture, but I do have Sparco sliders that add at least 1" to the seat height. Without the sliders, there is no way I could even get in the car. A removable steering wheel is in my future.

Been there, done that...works great. I actually think it improved the feel of the car. But as mentioned, I do recommend a thin layer of memory foam.

Before I removed the sunroof I had the same problem, use a thin foam sheet or even a thick towel, I also used foam on the sides where the edge of the seat would tend to dig in.

Driver comfort is paramount. When I got my car, it had a seat that didn't fit me well. Changing it out was the best upgrade I made!

This is second hand knowledge, but I've been told that when Pat Long gets in other people's cars to give them a ride, the first thing he does is take out the seat cushion. He's not exactly tall, so he doesn't do it for head room. He does it to improve his ability to sense what the car is doing.

I had to remove the cushion from my old RaceTech's because of headroom. I just sat on the shell and did not have a problem with sprints or enduro's - I seem to have plenty of self-cushion in that area I also have to remove the cushion in my teams lemon's car (a 944). I did not have an issue running 2 hour stints, but last year due to rain I ran a 3.5 hour stint - my butt was a bit soar after that...

Last year when I did the dual-use car thing:

Cushion in: road.
Cushion out: track.
Giving a kid a fun ride? Double cushion on passenger side.

The only trick was in keeping the cushion from blowing across the paddock when you take it out of the car!

Yup. Exactly what I do. I used to leave in the thigh bolsters (pro 2000 is a two piece cushion) then one day realized I had a lot easier time doing up the subs without it. Now they both come out until its time to drive home.

Great. Thanks guys for all the feedback. I just wanted to check to see if that's a weird thing to do. I am only a DE guy so at most I get 30 minutes per session (most of the time 20-25), so I doubt that the without the cushion I would be uncomfortable or anything. I will definitely look into the memory foam that was suggested, however.
