I have an UltraShield custom built aluminum race seat for the last 5 or so years. There's no padding on it at all, just a thin fabric cover. I love the seat, fit in it perfectly and experience no fatigue or discomfort even after doing 90 minute race enduros. Like Van said, fit is the key. If it fits you, then you don't need no stinkin' padding.

I swapped my thick Racetech cushion with a thin Sparco one to buy me more headroom. Drove someone's car this weekend in an enduro with no cushion and my butt was kind of numb after 30 minutes. I'm replacing my cushion with a thin beadseat when I have an hour to sit still in the garage..

I just put a Sparco in my race car also. You may not need to remove the entire cushion. If you pull the bottom cushion off, and open it up(fabric is only held together by velcro), you can remove some of the foam. The cushion has 3 layered pieces of foam held together by glue. I removed 2 of them and gained about 1-1.5" of headroom, while still retaining some padding.
