Default PORSCHE-BEST RACING CAR IN HISTORY?

Hey guys!

I know this is really hard to determine since there are so many factors involved, but maybe this would be a good topic to discuss...
First,I'd like to point out BEST RACING CAR,not sports car.
I think we can at least discuss about Porsche's racing history in the categories it was involved and maybe generalize a little bit as to come to a conclusion.
My opinion is that Porsche is the best, but I've encountered a lot of opinions that say that is not. Even one opinion recently that states that Mazda has the most overall wins in racing history. I tried to find an answer by looking up at some records, but couldn't find the answer.
Please leave your subjectivism aside and I can't wait for your answers!
Porsche surely states on their website that they are the most successful racing manufacturer in history :

http://press.porsche.com/motorsport/

" Over the course of the last 57 years the world-famous manufacturer from Stuttgart has tasted success in numerous areas and categories of motorsport, winning races and championships on virtually every level of the sport. It is the most successful manufacturer by far in the history of international sports car racing. "

My first choice is the 1970-1971 917 Kurzkeck (short tail) Lemans winner. Brutally fast, second choice is the 917/30. The car that killed Can-Am.

There are few books and movies around the motorsport history and Porsche. You may also in touch with your local Porsche club. Porsche museum had the count over 28,000 motorsport victories (march 2011).

While I will always love the 917-10 and /30, the Porsche racer that has to take that title is the 956/962 evolution. How many times did they win at Le Mans (among other places). Race cars are built for one purpose, and if you want to know the best race car, check the score board!

Well the video is about right for Porsche, 40 cars and not one 914 6 GT. Porsche loves to forget the car. I mean it did give them class victories at 24 hours of Le Mans, Daytona, and won the 1000Km of Spa and the IMSA title. Oh well...Same old story.

Where would I be able to verify all these statistics?

Wiki has good right-ups on individual cars - including listing important wins. As mentioned, a local Porsche owners club could direct you if you need further info or evidence. The 28,000+ motorsport wins - you have foto evidence of the official claim - and if you ask them nicely they will most likely give you complete list.

Hey Avader906!
Thank you for all your input.
The fact is I already know that Porsche is the best overall, but like I mentioned before, there are a lot of non-believers or Porsche haters that don't think so.
If you do a search you can't find a definite answer to this question.
Maybe this thread will help.
Thanks.

956/962

Mazda does like to brag about their motor sports involvement. They have a right to. A ton of Mazdas are raced every weekend. I would guess, no hard facts here, but Mazda may be considering all the amateur races like spec Miata as well as professional races while Porsche only counts professionally sanctioned events?

That's a really good point! I wish I knew the answer to that question....
But I believe we're talking about the professionally sanctioned events, those are the ones that count,no?

How about the 996 GT3.... Not an outright winner (although Buckler did win Daytona overall), but did win alot of races in alot of series. Esepcially when you group the GT3 R, RS, RSR, and Cup together. 956/962 did have the best sucess in overall finishes, but 996 GT3 racing variants are the closest things to true production racing cars. It seems like thousands were made...

I remember a commercial that Mazda had one time talking about how more Mazdas are road raced every weekend than any other car maker. Then in small print on the bottom of the screen it says based on SCCA data. I would think this is mostly spec miatas....

I wonder how many other car makers, if any, have won major races in Rally, F1, Prototypes, and sports cars?
