Default Anyone tracked their tow vehicle?

Ok, before you think I'm crazy, I have a VW Touareg TDI, which functions as my DD as well as my tow vehicle. I have such fun with this thing on the streets. I can easily enter a cloverleaf at 50mph and if it wasn't for the margin of safety I want, could probably go 60 easily since I don't get any tire squeal instability at 50. This got me to thinking about taking it out for a few laps at Sebring just for kicks. The brakes calipers seem to be pretty big from what I can tell, and there doesn't seem to be that much body roll for a 5500 lb vehicle. I can't imagine a Cayenne could handle much better than the Touareg, although the throttle response has a delay which I don't like.

Me and a friend once tried to track our tow vehicules (pick-up trucks) at the ground school of the RSR region. They said no. They thought that we might start to race them on the track...

Don't know where they'd got that idea

Not me, but a guy in the club tracked his Cayenne S tow vehicle at Bathurst on road tyres. Hit about 220km/h on the straight. For those that don't know this iconic Australian track here is a link. Look at the elevation change (174m) and length of straight:

I spent about 4 hours at a DE giving rides at speed in a Cayenne S. Suprisingly very capable vehicle. Once I made a few changes in my driving it was a blast. Returned the truck back to the dealer with the tires well worn.

A friend of mine auto-x his Cayenne and did really well. Ray Catena Porsche brought a few Turbo Cayenne to Watkins Glen when they first came out, they were wicked fast . I bet you TDI would be great fun on the track and probability make a few people mad that you passed them. I was at meet and greet with Hurley Haywood when Porsche first said they will be releasing an SUV and remember him saying this. His words" Not only will the Cayenne tow your race car to the track but once your there, it will be faster then you race car." I dont think my track chair would like me talking my 3500 Dually out on the track.

I once took my '01 Suburban, with the 8.1L big-block, out on the track during parade laps. The squealing tires in every corner amused all my passengers. And, surprisingly, the "lead" vehicle even got us up over 100mph on the main straight. The person in front of me in a Toyota Celica TRD even gave me a .

Yup. At SCCA licensing schools. For the most part, license candidates are in their race cars in race conditions. But there are a few sessions where the instructor takes their group on track - first session for familiarization and later to discuss more advanced concepts.

In my case, these were hot laps in a diesel Excursion. Non a full track day but the tires were making happy sounds.

BTW, if you can't guess, a diesel Excursion understeers just a tiny bit.

I never tracked my tow vehicles, but I did run my old '77 Dodge Van through an autocross course one time to prove that it wasn't too tight.

Had an F350 diesel bearing down on me at Sebring during a chin event. Filled my mirrors.

I might be guilty of doing just that on occasion:

My Tow Vehicle is 99 dodge 2500 V10. 2wd, but sometimes I wonder if steering wheel is event attached to the front wheels. At least it tows well.

When I did my first ever event at Sebring last Feb, PCA Club Race, IIRC there were some official Sebring support trucks, including F350 dualies, that were hustling around the track at various times.
