Default What does everyone do with electrics when they build a track car?

Just getting to the point where the old stock dash has come out along with all the heater console stuff etc. Damn this stuff is heavy. We're still left with a ton of wiring. The car will have a standalone with it's own harness so I'm thinking there won't be much need for a lot of the oem wiring. Really you just need lights, wipers, demister fan and whatever else. Not sure if the fuel pump will run from the standalone?
It would be good to be able to move or eradicate the stock fuse box and as our braking equip is on the LH side I am hoping that by removing all this we might reveal enough room for the oil tank for the Dry Sump.

Any suggestions and pics are welcome.

Every bit of wiring is gone from my turbo and there will be no fuses. I'm going to use all breaker switches which will mount on the dash. However I have no fan, head lights etc just the bare minimum which makes getting rid of the old wiring a lot easier.
Are you going to move the battery? I will be mounting mine on the passenger floor in a small case.

3 options.

1) leave it as is. This addes weight
2) cut off what you don't need and leave the stock stuff only on what you need
3) remove it all and wire back in only what you need.

http://944-spec.org has some info on lightweight custom wiring.

I pulled ever wire from my rebuild and used an 8 circuit painless kit.

Gary, I'm still going to hang the licence plates on my car for a while even though it won't get driven much at all on the road, but I'll still need lights.
Our batteries are back in the rear hatch area just behind the left hand rear wheel so I'll probably keep it there for the time being.

Think I'll go with option 3 Joe. Especially after seeing that kit in Tim's post.

That looks perfect Tim. Thanks for that. Where can I buy something like that?
btw guys, where do I get the window netting from? Is the thinner string type still available or have they all gone to the ribbon style?

Just search "Painless Wiring Kit", it's carried in by a number of race shops or straight from Painless (http://www.painlesswiring.com/). Might be available down under as well.

Thanks Tim. Any advice on where to get door netting that's not ribbon style? Or am I worrying about nothing? Someone suggested that the string style is easier to look through.

I would like to remove all the old unecessay wiring in my car but I am afraid to just start chopping and hacking. How do you know what can go and what must stay?

Sean, it's a process that you can only do with a good wiring diagram. I think you are still using factory fuel and engine management with heating and ventilation so you would still need most of what you have.
