Default 996 race car questions

I am going to pick up my first Porsche within 10 days. A 1999 911 C2. It has an aero kit and a full GT3 suspension. I raced an Audi A4 for 4yrs with NASA, and plan to convert this car to a full race car. I have been researching this car and discovered some things that need special attention for my intended use. I understand that oil starvation is a problem and I will need a baffled oil pan (X73 option I believe), and also wheel bearings need to be monitored closely. Is there anything else experienced 996 owners/racers can tell me about this model?

Thanks in advance.

Deep sump is good. More oil = good
Inspect oil filter regularly for metal ( indicator of possible impending IMS "issue")
Get out there, thrash it and have fun.

Oh yes one other thing; keep a spare motor at hand.

It's the X51 oil pan you want. Accusump is probably worth consideration in addition, but X51 for sure.

You really don't need to go to the expense of a full monoball suspension to build a fast car. Yes it will help, but there are other places I'd put the money first. Among other things, LWFW and LSD really help out these cars.

Regardless of what class you are building for, you might want to look at the Spec996 rules for ideas:

Thanks for all the feed back. The current owner tells me it has a full GT3 suspension currently on it. Not sure what that is comprised of until I get it on the rack.

Third radiator, that's a good idea, and where would I purchase this item?

I am located in Ohio and will be building this car for NASA GTS. Although I will most likely run the car only in Time Trials this season. I am coming form an AWD nose heavy race car, so I want to learn how this car likes to be driven as I build it and of course to have some fun.

mglobe, What is an LWFW????

flywheel but no clutch upgrade? Was just planning to do the flywheel when I put the nasty race clutch in.

LSD, X51 oil pan, SS brake lines, and third radiator sounds like a good start for the month of December. Soooo who sells the best Porsche goodies?

Might consider doing an IMS upgrade (http://www.lnengineering.com/ims.html#retrofit) and updated RMS while you are in there!

Hey Dave,

Good to see you are coming over to the Dark Side. Not sure where you're located but Wright Tuning in Cincy services my car and does some of the other GTS cars too. They have tons of experience with Koni/Continental cars, not to mention the 10 or so cup cars sitting in the shop last week. I am sure they could make a few suggestions and may have some of the parts laying around.

Maybe I'll see you at MO in April?

Suncoast sells the third radiator kit at a reasonable price. Yes LWFW is lightweight flywheel, and a sport clutch needs to go in with it.

Send Darren a PM. He races a '99 in NASA over here in Phila and has a lot of experience with them.
