Default Hamilton to be penalized 5 grid spots for Japanese GP

Five-place grid penalty for Hamilton
9 October 2010

Following two DNF's at the Italian and Singapore Grand Prix respectively Lewis Hamilton faces another disappointment as the McLaren driver received a five-place grid penalty for Sunday's Japanese Grand Prix. McLaren decided to change his gearbox ahead of Sunday morning's qualifying session.

The team announced on Saturday that it found an oil pressure problem in Hamilton's gearbox. Lewis Hamilton will join his colleagues on Sunday morning for qualifying at 10.00 am local time.

No surprize coming from $peed channel, they have the oportunity to show F1 qualifying in central time LIVE and the choose to go delayed... oh well

It'll be fun with the changing weather conditions, hope the rain is just the enough condiment to a great show so we can have a full race...

Last night on Speed TV they were saying that if the morning qualifying sessions are canceled then the grid for the race will be setup according to the 2009 Constructors championship standings meaning McLaren will be on pole. Why? McLaren did not win last year, Brawn GP won. But because Jenson Button was the drivers champion and now he is with McLaren, McLaren gets the pole. WTF? Sounds rather messed up, but that is what they were saying. But I guess even if there is no qualifying session, Lewis Hamilton will NOT be on the front row with Jenson because Lewis is taking a 5 grid spot penalty for a changed gear box?

Good grief as cool as F1 is, they sure have some rather ####ed up rules.

If I was in charge, I would set the grid based on the current driver standings if the qualifying sessions could not be run.

Somehow I couldn't see F1 setting a grid with a karting style pea pick ... Although most of the drivers probably still remember times like that.

The constructors title and points has always taken priority over the drivers championship IMHO

Hamilton gets gearbox-change penalty

Saturday, October 9th 2010, 11:14 GMT

Lewis Hamilton's championship hopes suffered another big blow on Saturday after he was given a penalty for changing his car's gearbox.

The British driver, who has not scored in the previous two races, will require a gearbox change ahead of tomorrow's qualifying.

"In P3 today, we noticed abnormal gearbox oil pressure on Lewis's car, which we believed we had corrected ahead of this afternoon's qualifying session," said a McLaren spokesman.

"This afternoon, as we fired up Lewis's car several times in preparation for qualifying, we became aware that the symptoms were worse than we'd originally diagnosed, and a decision was later taken to change the gearbox ahead of tomorrow's qualifying session and the grand prix.

"As a result, Lewis will receive a five-place grid penalty for tomorrow's race."

The grid-deciding session will take place on Sunday - five hours ahead of the start of the race - after officials were forced to cancel today's qualifying because of the poor weather.

Hamilton, 20 points behind championship leader Mark Webber with four races to go, has endured a tough weekend at Suzuka so far, having crashed out on Friday and having managed just six timed laps so far.

Yesss sah ! .........

This is what the points situation looks like currently :

1 Mark Webber ... Australian ... RBR-Renault ... 202
2 Fernando Alonso ... Spanish .. Ferrari ... 191
3 Lewis Hamilton British ... McLaren-Mercedes ... 182
4 Sebastian Vettel ... German ... RBR-Renault .... 181
5 Jenson Button ... British .... McLaren-Mercedes .... 177

If Bernie reaches into his bag of tricks ( FIA rule book) and allow the grid to form based on car numbers, instead of qualy, that move would favor button and lewis and could tighten up the drivers points, a necessity for a dub yah in Abu Dahbi ....

Hmmmmmmm...........

Another reason why Bernie should be shot if he gives the poll to McLaren after RB has been at the top of the practice sessions.

I can't find when the Qual will start LOCAL JAPAN time - anyone know?

I understand that Speed will air it tonight, tape delay -

But BBC will probably air it realtime, which means I can watch it RIGHT after it airs on BBC iplayer.

Its 5:31am right now in Japan on Sunday morning.

I have not yet found how to watch live streaming, but I can watch it just after its done airing in the UK. So the UK time is 2am for a 10am qual in Japan (pardon my mental math). So UK is 8+ for CA, so if its 2am then it will start 6pm our time, and will be available online at iplayer for play at 8pm here.

Cool.
