Default 996 cars only: Hose clamp must be installed around oil filler cap - ?!

NEWB ALERT!

CVR tech rule.... I know its plain English but I am doing something wrong.

Got the metal hose clamp from the hardware store with a screw that makes its radius smaller. Got it around the radius of the filler cap and it slips off when I tighten it.. I cant get it tight enough to make the cap stop spinning...

whats the procedure here? I am probably over thinking this... pictures anyone?

What do they have you put on the radiator tank cap or the gas cap? What's the point of that rule anyways? You guys losing your caps? Sounds like it will just cause cracked oil filler pipes, which are not easy to replace!

? the 964 and 993 cars need a band clamp on the yellow oil fill cap. This fix is a Porsche printed fix BTW. What cap on the 996?

The cap is the yellow fill cap for the early 996 coolant tank.

The CVR tech sheet reads: "996 cars only: Hose clamp must be installed
around oil filler cap."

This is based on a TB from Porsche when they noticed a POTENTIAL failure of the filler cap (coming loose & falling off) on the Mk1.

A simple hose clamp... placed around the filler cap tightened firmly (still allows removal of cap) and then you are set for the SPIRIT OF THE RULE.

These filler caps really do not come off... BUT, we are in a world of WHAT IF's and litigation.

when putting on the clamp, you should try to make sure that the screw part is new the air filter housing body so that IF it starts to move, it will be held against it.

I agree that it was never an issue for me, but I put the clamp on as an added precaution. I wouldn't want a major issue that could have been avoided for an inexpensive clamp.

just what I was looking for - thanks.

Just had my car teched and the box next to this is marked with a minus "-" not an "x" - if I put this clamp on before the event, will the tech at the event give me a hard time about the tech form not having the "x" in place?

thanks

No. That's the purpose, so you can fix any deficiencies.

A friend's cap came off a couple years ago while on-track. A small fire ensued after he got back to the pits.

I honestly dont see how a hose clamp around the cap can prevent the cap from coming off... But I want to run the event so...

Oil fill cap in 964s and 993s is not yellow, nor does it need any clamps.

The only way it would have come off is: IF he did not have it seated all the way on!

When you twist the cap on completly it seats against an "O-RING", thus creating a slight compression.

The thought process behind the hose clamp is that it will create higher friction... I.E not allowing the cap to vibrate loose...

All cars with a yellow fill oil fill cap should have a hose clamp. This includes 964, 993, early 996. The 993/964 cap gets soft and leaks oil the 996 cap comes off. This rule is for your benefit.
I am the CVR tech chair. As far as giving you grief we try hard not to do that

I will agree that age can cause the plastic too soften.... BUT, I will not agree that the 996 cap just comes OFF!

Does anyone have a picture of this? Does the hose clamp go around the outside of the cap and is tightend?
