Default Automotion CF A-pillar winglet attachment?

Hey all,

Another question - I ordered up a a pair of the Automotion carbon fibre a-pillar winglets (here).

I was sure I read a thread here about how people attach them without screws or rivets (a special tape of some kind) but I have searched every term I can think of and can't find that thread.

Any suggestions on the best way to attach these suckers?

Thanks.

Marc

High quality double stick tape is what you want.

How functional are these winglets? Does such a small aero piece make a big difference?

they definitely win the DE and C&C tho, I got some Ruf ones for my 964. super nice and well made.

will attach with 3m acrylic body trim double sided tape. same stuff i used on my wing wicker that has held that one for 2 years at 150+ mph

Used rivets on mine. Its a race car, looks purposeful and meant to be a permanent install.

Really. That's pretty impressive if that's actually true. I would have given a lot to get three mph at Daytona.

That would be tough to prove and doubtful 2-3 mph would be an expected gain....reduction of drag coefficient from .3 to .27Cd, (10% reduction in drag) and HP of around 200, speeds of around 165mph, would do it, but i don't think that those little fins would do that.

any wind tunnel tests with and without? is this just a 911 thing, or also for any window triangle cover..... and this begs the question, what does rolling up the window vs open cost as far as drag. the cup car guys should have data there. (they can have their window up vs the rest of us. )

I studied aero stuff for a long time and still relatively confused on how the window triangle, roll bar to door opening cover and these fins help all that much..... I couldnt figure it out, so i just did it anyway too

when someone says , "its worth 2-3mph at top speed", i always think of the "2-3 seconds per lap or MPH, advantage for 3lbs lighter wheels "

^ the figure is verbatim from a well known wrench who had direct experience with IMSA 964/993 cars at Daytona.

No accident that people often shave the rain/drip rails off these cars.

a lot of smart people get caught up in anecdotal evidence. Im not disputing that car went 2-3mph faster with the little rain gutter cover, but its very possible and probable that the speed increase was due to something else. you can use some intuition here.. do you think that winglet cover thingee can reduce the overall coefficient of drag , of the entire car, by 10% because, that's what it would take to gain about 3-4mph.

In doing a quick calulations of the drag coeff. of a 911, and a 10% change, and how long it takes to get to 160mph and what net HP it takes to do it..... i dont think im very far off.............and thats at a 10% reduction of overall drag. i would think that if the winglet cover made a 1% change, that would be very good. Kind of like when folks remove mirrors for the speed runs at Bonneville, which would be more effective i would guess.

a 2% change in overall drag would yield about .5mph at 150mph, given ball park HP and vehicle frontal area with Cd of near .32. nothing in my calculations could be 4-6x off

So the testing we did 22 years ago is finally told. We tested the OG Racing 911 with the standard tufts of yellow yarn that were about 3" long. Had them attached all over the car. Did the testing at Summit Point. Video taped everything, from every angle. We tried different wings, tails, splitters, window nets, wheel well opening add ons, angle of attack and other items to see what worked and what didn't. One of the things we tried was covering the rain gutters. The results? We didn't use them.
And the coolest part of doing all the testing, the chase car that we did the video from. Bruce Jennings 4 cam Speedster Race car. Thank you to Dave Coleman at Summit Point who taught me a lot about the care, feeding and racing of cars.
