No external mic jack. Built in mic only.

Anyone know if 60fps is that much better than 30fps? Looks like for $30 more there are two choices that will record at 60fps. Aiptek HD 720P with 2GB storage and Aiptek A-HD+ 1080. If using an external storage card is it better to go with the 1080 and just record in 720 at 60fps?

Thanks!

Just noticed that the HD 720P has an external mic jack and the 1080 does not. Given complaints about the quality of the audio is the ability to use an external mic important?

I've got the Hi-speed camera right now. I've tried an external mic with it, but have not been all that happy with the results to date. Also, this camera does not support the use of a remote control. It does a good job of recording video, but after it breaks, I plan to get one that can support a remote.

Thanks Mike. Good catch.

I couldn't find anything that specifically stated that the 1080P was compatible with the remote, but it was listed as an accessory on the Aiptek site.

I've got the HD 720 and have never been able to get the external mic to work. The sound I get is all right from the internal mic, for some reason not near as much wind noise as my old camcorder.

I talked with Aiptek about this. The problem is that the camera is expecting a stereo microphone input. If you go to radio shack and buy a mono to stereo mini-plug adaptor, you'll get the external microphone to function.

I've been reasonably satisfied with the sound from the built-in internal mic on my A-HD+. The only advantage to using an external mic that I could think of for me personally would be if I could position it to pick up what an instructor or coach was saying from the right hand seat. But that is unlikely given the high level of noise in my car. Example of my audio here. In fact, you can see my camera in the rear view mirror.

Thanks Mike and Greg!

Think I'll go with the 1080 and take my chances with the built-in mic. Guess I'll have to get all the goodies (remote, wide-angle lens etc.) and get to work on a Frakencharger. Good winter project!

Thanks again for the advice.

VR, is yours the "A-HD" or the "A-HD+"? (There is probably nothing on the camera body itself indicating it is a "plus" or "+" model, at least that's the case with my plus model). The difference is the plus model has the ability to record 720P at 60fps or 1080P at 30fps in the options menu (Select "Menu", then "Video Resolution"). My understanding is that the regular A-HD (for $69) only has the ability to record in 30fps. I think what some folks are trying to determine is whether or not it's worth the extra money to have 60fps capability or if 30fps is adequate. Some people say 60fps smooths out the video more in a fast action scene. Personally, I'd like to see a side-by-side comparison to see if that is really the case for on-track video. If 30fps looks great on the track, then I'd just buy the cheaper model.

I believe mine is the Hi Speed 720P model. Beacuase that's how I roll.
