WOW! I had the opportunity to drive a mid 60's McLaren Can-Am car at Roebling a few years back. Incredible experience!

I raced it 4 years was incredibly fast.
1700 lbs 850-900 hp all aluminum injected V8.
I put motec on it to make it more reliable instead of the old Lucas timed injection.
Plus Indycar type data acq back then called ProdataM
Wicked fast I crossed the line at Daytona circa 210 MPH...
Driver position was almost lying down with a molded pillow around your head...
Watkins Glen 194 before the busstop.
The fronts had 4 calipers 2 per side...
The only reason I stopped racing it was since I was pushing it so hard I was worried about having my feet ahead of the front axle centerline...

Don't think I ever saw that car compete, but aren't the cars and the series of that era underrated? Most of the drivers we know from elsewhere, either coming or going: Unser Jr, Crawford, Holbert, Villenueve...... And some of the older cars were running in SCCA nationals in ASR; sometimes we'd pit near them and I'd go over and make a pest of myself.

The second generation of Can-Am cars (original Can-Am ran from 1966-1974) were F5000 cars with enclosed bodywork. The SCCA Resurrected the Can-Am after the demise of F5000. A lot of talent went through the series. Gille Villenueve, Jody Scheckter, Alan Jones, to name a few.

This was the indeed 2nd generation Can-Am. This was driven by Danny Sullivan and was the car in the movie "Circuit" it was owned and run by Garvin Brown (who owns Jack Daniels distillery).
Some of the 2nd generation CanAms like the March 817 budweiser cars were F5000's converted or Indycars converted - the Lola was purpose built for Can-Am and was monocoque.
Keke Rosburg, Bobby Rahal, Teo Fabi, Al Holbert, and a bunch others raced them...
The original engine had less power and was steel. Thats the one on the stand.
This engine is an all aluminum built by one of the best teams that builds Nascar engines.
I had to be very careul with the throttle with over 750 ft-lbs torque to not shred the gearbox.
Danny Sullivan was at Daytona for a race I ran there and he signed the tub and I put helicopter tape over it; he said it never looked that good when he ran it LOL...
They did magazine pics with my car and another GenII can-am that Steve Simpson and owned and raced.

A Wayne, LOL no.
I raced a Spice GTP C1 for 2 years before racing the CanAm for 4 years.
I have been thinking about something like a Radical SR8LM or some other lower maint (in comparison) club level car that is fun...
We will see.
I sold the Can-Am back in 2003....
