Default Edit: Found a suburban

I need one. I have about 4-5k to spend - over 100k miles okay.

Seems like the prices are all over the place. 3500-8k for these cars in various years, mileage, and condition. It doesn't need to be perfect, but I expect a rust-free, mechanically solid, not-green 2500 suburban for around this price.

Thanks

Interesting. 98 - How many miles did it have? 7500 is on the high side. Good for you.

San Diego has prices like that. But in the OC and LA they are about 75% of that, down to more like 5000.

I did look on ebay. Prices and mileage were all over the place, and the selection within 500 miles was nill to none. On the other hand craigslist has dozens within 2 hours.

You shouldn't have a problem finding a clean 2WD 96 suburban for $4-5K. I sold my very clean 96 2WD for about $5.5K about 3 years ago. Had about 130K miles on it and cloth interior, but was cosmetically very clean and mechanically solid. (honestly, I'd prefer the cloth seats over the cheap GM leather after 10+ years of wear). Of course, I don't know what the market is like where you are.

Holy crap. I bought my 97 1500 GMC SLT 2WD for only 3K and it has been great so far... Sounds like I got a deal!

Its clear that the prices are ALL over the place. Some people will obviously be more apt to deal than others.

I have narrowed my search to a 2500 series, with the 4L80E transmission. Much beefier, I'm told, than the 4L60E.

There are some high mileage 2000s and 2001s that are dealable down it seems. High mileage means stuff like bushings, springs, etc. There is one with the trans replaced with 200,000 miles, but its a 2001, and it has the 8.1L BBC.

Hi,

I know of a PCA member who's selling a '99 Suburban 2500 with the big gas engine (454?). It's in good condition with about 80K miles (not positive on the mileage), and I believe it's for sale for about $7K. Let me know if you're interested. Sent you a PM too.

Thanks Scott. Answered your PM.

There are alot of 2500s with replaced engines and lesser so, transmissions.

To me, this is a good thing. With no rust, the body is good for a long, long time. When you replace the engine or other parts of the drivetrain, you get to reset to 0. As long as it is done right.

Indeed. Is that just a 2500 or is that more?

Well, then that has always been my plan. I am now thinking of adding some cash to my original amount and moving up to a post-2000 model. There seems to be several improvements, outside and inside. Engines are a 6L or a 8.1L I think, and the trans is still a 4L80E, and the rear end is still a 14B FF axle. I have the axle from a 2003 HD duramax utility, so if I wanted to I could pop that in and get disk brakes as well. I don't know if thats what the 2000 and 2001 2500 suburbans already had.

2000+ Suburbans (1/2 and 3/4 tons) all have 4 wheel disk brakes. It was a big improvement over the generation in the picture I posted. the closer to the 2006 model year (the last for the 2000+ generation), the better. The engines got more powerful, especiually the 8.1 liter, which is a stellar powerplant, with 440lb/ft of trailer-pulling torque.
