Question for those running a Gaurds LSD
After intensive investigation about which LSD to get I had Paul Gaurd (http://www.guardtransmission.com/lsd_info.htm) make a 50/80 LSD for my 944 S2 track car a couple of years ago and could not have been more satisfied...
During the off season I want to replace all the fluids and I thought I remember reading something about using a special fluid with the Gaurds unit.
So I emailed Paul and he said:
"While our LSDs are happy with many different oils, the only synthetic track oil that we can recommend with confidence for your transmission is Lubrication Engineers #9920."
While I have absolute faith in Paul and his LSD's I have never heard of this oil. Has anyone run this in their tranny?

Thanks.

I have the same LSD going in my new trans right now, and during my discussions with Paul he said the same thing... standard diff oil only, no synthetics. I've been running Redline in my existing trans but obviously need to figure out the same thing.
So, interested to hear the responses..

Yep, that is what Paul is recommending now. He use to recommend Mobil 1 Delvac 75w90. The Guard diff is fundamentally the same as a Porsche and we use the Delvac with both Guard and Porsche Motorsports diffs and it works well. DO NOT use the Mobil 1 LS 75w90, that is not the appropriate gear oil.

Ok, this depends who you ask. if you call Brian Copans, he will say mobile 1 is fine (he is THE authority on transmissions and does all the porsches in GA and WC.)
If you ask Guard they will say to Call Charles Massey at LI 817-834-6321 and get the stuff for your model diff. On average the oil they have has been measured to run 30 deg cooler then Mobile1 redline or whatever. Alternatively, Guard says to use mobile delvac, it says diesel oil, but don't worry about it. it's just more viscous.
I personally use mobile 1 but replace all fluids after every race.

After buying a Guard which I am now installing, I bought 5 gallons of 9920 from a Lubrication Engineers distributor. That was the minimum quantity available.

I use LE9920 per Paul's recommendation too.
You can get them in quart bottles here: http://www.mag-hytec.com/store/

I always buy it 4 jugs at a time since I change it so frequently (they come in 1 gallon jugs). You will use just under a gallon for the change. I am sure there are suppliers out in Cali that would make it cheaper to buy than where I do. I get mine from Lufteknic in Richmond, VA.
