My HANS was new in Oct. 05 SFI SPEC 38.1
When or does it expire?
My search did not work.

I saw a post or information some place that they recommend replacing the tethers every two years or if they look frayed. I would think the device itself would last as long or longer than the 5 years rated on harnesses, but have never seen a limitation on it.

Also if you just need new regular fixed tethers go to a trackside store and see if they have any that have come off a HANS that soemone switched to QR or Sliding tethers.

At this point PCA club racing is not requiring replacement within any specific time period. We reserve the right to require replacement if the driver and device have been in a hard wreck but otherwise, no replacement time limit. As an FYI, the scrutineer who views your car after a wreck will let you know whether an inspection of your helmet, seat, etc are being required before you can race again and it only happens in cases of truly catastrophic incidents. I believe we only do this a couple of times a year at most.
Merry Christmas to all from PCA club racing.

What is the cheapest HANs type restraint system that meets club racing requirements? Is it required for PCA, POC or NASA(PRC)now? I know with SCCA, its not mandatory yet. Im still using an old hutchenson device.

From HANS training at PRI...
How long will a HANS Device last?
- SNELL recommends replacing compeition helmets every five years.
- HANS Devices are made of similar materials & resins
- They are also exposed to similar environments even the best materials deterioriate over time
- Snell's 5 year rule for helmets is only a guideline, but might be appropriate depending on usage
Hans recommends replacing the tethers every 2 years or if they show signs of wear or fray or involved in an accident. We have not seen where sanctioning bodies are requiring tech to inspect the tether dates but if in doubt, check your rule book. If you take care of the device and it's not involved in accident, it could last a long time (longer than 5 years). Maintenance tips below:
- Hans Devices should be kept clean & dry
- Extreme hot or cold invironments should be avoided
- Devices should be kept away from petroleum products or other corrosives; these can have unexpected results on even the strongest composite materials & resins.
- Devices should be stored out of direct sunlight or in a bag for protection
- They may be cleaned with soapy warm water
