Default very sad news

"Wednesday, August 13, 2008
Lime Rock Park was closed down for an hour and
half today to honor Paul Newman. He was attended
by his family, close friends, Skip Barber, mechanics
on his race team, and those who happened to be at
the track. PLN toured the track in his Corvette race
car with his Buick V8 powered Volvo station wagon
following. He had come to say goodbye. Diagnosed
with terminal cancer he is not expected to live beyond
September. Race driver, actor, humanitarian, family
man and friend b they did not come any better."

I will really miss him at LRP, a real class act.

I ran into him at a Champ Car race in Toronto. Class act all the way.

Time to fire up "Cool Hand Luke".

I think it is great that he has the time to put things in order and say goodbye warmly to the people and things he loved.

He came into our lives with style - and he now is leaving with a lot of class.

Anyone remember his little Volkswagen with the Porsche engine?

Truly one of a kind. Besides his racing, he was a standout in Hollywood without the false aura usually reserved for the Hollywood elite. A philanthropist that donated the proceeds of his food brands to charity. We may never see another like him.

I cannot find a single story on any of the news websites. Of course if you want to read about the passing Gene Upshaw, it's on all the websites.

Mike, where did you hear about Newman?

Dell, he hasn't passed away, yet. He is terminal and not expected to live past next month. This is a (for lack of better word) pre-death recognition of a great man.

Default I was once paddocked next to Sharp Racing...

at the SCCA runoffs at Road Atlanta when PLN was racing a 240Z. Lots of folks would hang around trying to get a glimpse or to meet Paul Newman. We found a much better apporach. We'd walk over with a small number of misc nuts and bolts and ask the shorter guy with the skinny legs and blue eyes if he had any that matched. He'd invite us into the transporter and proceed to look through drawers to find us some suitable parts. This was racer to racer, not star to star-struck. Just another one of the racers trying to get through and enjoy a race weekend. A true gentleman and sportsman.

Cheers,

A class act who has always given a lot back to society. I hope he doesn't suffer.
I believe he also recently celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary with Joanne Woodward.

EDIT: As I sit here reading this thread, I just realized the cookies I'm eating are Newman's Own "Champion Chip Cookies." The bag has a sticker that reads, "Paul Newman has given over $200 million to thousands of charities worldwide since 1982."

Wow!

That man has done so much for so many for so long, with such humility.
