Race car drivers are not athletes

George Carlin had some opinions on this matter (starting about 2:45 into this clip):

Since we're on sports and athleticism, quite a while ago Scientific American devoted a whole issue to sports.
The editors determined the toughest single thing to do in sports was to hit a Major League pitch.

A couple ways to look at athletic 'capacity'.
IMO, I think you can check off quite a few on these lists re. motorsports.
ABCDEs = Agility, Balance, Coordination, Dance, Explosiveness/Endurance
Endurance
- aerobic & anaerobic fitness
- willingness/capacity to suffer
Strength & Power
- based on demands of activity (motorsports = core & neck)
Motor Skills
- sport specific neuromuscular coordination
Mental Skills
- motivation
- focus
- determination
- tactics & strategy
There are an awful lot of people who are "fit" - as defined by narrow physiological measures (strength, power, endurance) - but have poor motor skills and inadequate mental competencies for competition.

Carl Lewis was a top sprinter, but couldnt do a darn thing but run in straight line!
I agree with most of the classifications of what a sport is, but one quality that has been left out is Courage!
thats why stand by the qualifications of a "real" sport being one that has a risk of death or serous injury. everything else is just social games

First of all, there are other things that are harder than that, just as an example, in ice hockey, every 10th shot is a goal which makes it harder if determined by how many times you try. Besides, if I'd stand there with a baseball bat, I'm guessing I could hit (by luck) if they'd throw the ball at me, say 500 times but there's no way I could score a goal if I tried 500 times because I wouldn't even have a chance to get to the other team's zone to make the damn shot, let alone score.
And let's look at say, gymnastics. I'm not a big fan but what those guys do on those two rings that hang from the ceiling is something I couldn't even dream of doing but hitting a baseball seems much more realistic.
Or how about driving flatout with F1 car through Eay Rouge?
Somehow I think an "average Joe" can hit a baseball but not go through Eau Rouge flat...
Or how about clearing a 50 ft tabletop jump with a motocross bike?
Again, hitting a baseball seems much more doable for a someone who has just been pulled from a street for testing these two "stunts".

try polevaulting if you want to try something "tough" to do. However, all that flipping motorcycle stuff is quite amazing.
I think that was on the list as well.

I saw that and think it's such bull**** (didn't they determine it by explaining that only every 7th throw is a hit?).
