I think I know the answer to this question, and only I can really answer it but I'm interested in others' opinions.

I drive in advanced DE run groups at present and plan to start racing in '09.
I have a (Stand21) helmet that is Hans ready- should I pull the trigger?

Part of me says its overkill for DE, but the other part says **** happens. I have a good FIA/SPI suit for the same reason; I tend to burn easily ; )

 

The answer is simple; the question is do you have 5/6 poiint belts or stock belts? (stock won't allow you to use it - properly at least).

 

A 100mph hit is a 100mph hit, whether it be while racing or DE'ing. The wall knows no difference.

 

The wall does not care if you were in DE or racing.

Of course to run a HANS in DE you need a harness, proper mounting a proper seat. If you are still usinga 3pt and stock seats in DE there is not point to get a HANS unless you will also get the rest.

One question do you wear a harness? If yes get the HANS. I have personally seen some pretty bad shunts at DE's and the additional layer of protection is $$ well spent. Also since you plan on racing in 09 you will likely be required to have one by rule. The devises are very comfortable and once you wear it for a session you forget its on. I started wearing one a couple years ago and I was the odd-ball, today almost everyone in my group has one.

Congrats on the suit and remember its not only fire rated, its get your @ss out of the car rated if the corner workers need to pull you out. T-shirts tend to slip off.

I made sure when I was tracking my 964 for DE and TT that I had everything setup for a HANS. I had Recaro SPG's with the DAS bar, and Sparco 5 pts. It took me a bit to buy one because not many people were running them for these events. But eventually I realized it didn't matter, safety first. Now that I am racing, running the HANS was a no brainer.

Funny enough when I had my shunt, I knew I was going to hit the tire wall, and I was relaxed knowing I would be OK b/c of the safety gear. I am not sure how much being relaxed is a safety factor in itself, but it must be worth something in addition to the HANS I would think.

If you do pull the trigger make sure all the dimensions of your setup (belts, bar, seats) are all setup per the HANS and belt mfgr's recommendations. For instance, I had to run the SPG XL's in the 964 because they were the only seat tall enough such that I had the proper angle on my belts when I had my HANS on.

If you have the proper harness' then there is no question. It only takes once to regret the decision for the rest of your life (or whats left of it god forbid).

 

They are easy and comfortable and it will be automatic on day two. Do some practice on attaching and removing in car before you take it to the track.

I cannot understand why more people don't.

++ on the Recaro SPG, consider the Pro. I regret not getting the pro and will now upgrade for the lateral protection.

Hans is real easy to get used to. Only know it's there getting in and out of the car

 

Seriously - you will probably only get 1 chance if something goes wrong. Safety first, the cost is negligible over the long run.

Just wondering, what is your justification for not getting one? All I can think of is cost.
