If you have a 6 point harness, its a no-brainer. The only part of your body that moves under impact is your helmet weighted head/neck UNLESS it is secured. You assign a value to that.

I have to original version. I bought the sliding tether kit to update it, but haven't even bothered to install it. I don't notice the HANS at all on the track and the old style is really just a minor hassle when backing up or trying to talk to someone in the pit. Point is... Even without the sliding tether, I find it comfortable.

As for trying one on, most online retailers/shops will allow you to return it, as long as it's in new condition (if you can't find a local shop)

The R3 has been worn by instructors, since it can be used with 3 point belts.
Some people use the padding for the R3, some don't....I guess it depends on the person and the type of seat.
There is a 'rent to own' program offered for the R3:

FWIW, there are other H&N restraints that are 'worn' like the R3 (no affiliation, no SFI38.1 debate, not another H&N restraint JIHAD intended)

David, since this is for DE only, want to buy my ISAAC for a price much less than a HANS? It will protect you just as well, and gives you excellent freedom of motion, and is not as specific in the seat/harness setup. PM me (...please)

OK. For the equal restraint rule.

Theoretically speaking, why is there an equal restraint rule for the driver and passenger?

Now, expand that to consider what is equal/unequal about:

[x] Left Seat = Right Seat
[x] Left harness and harness mounts = right harness and harness mounts
[ ] Left Hans and Right Hans. Oops the guy in the right seat has no HANs.
[x] Okey dokey artichokey

Other safety:

[x] Helmet left seat and helmet right seat
[ ] Quality of Helmet left seat = quality of helmet in right seat
[ ] Gloves left seat and gloves right seat
[ ] Nomex worn in left seat and Nomex worn in right seat
[?] Access to fire extinguisher/suppression in Left seat and Access to fire exting/suppress in right seat

What am I missing?

I still track a street car but have instructed in a number of cars equipped with have harnesses. One day I may have to sit with a student driver that will make me uneasy enough to request a switch with an instructor that has a HANS.

Go ahead and laugh at me: I still have lap and shoulder belt and therefore no HANS. I have never heard any discussion of HANS being required in the passenger seat of a harness equipped car. Should this be coming?

Hope this isn't too off topic. If so, I can start anew.

Thanks.

I have to admit at the last lapping session I went to I felt like a bit of a weenie in my Oakley Carbon-X unders/balaclava/gloves, Isaac, 6-point harness, SPG seats, and DAS roll bar. There were other guys there driving in shorts and t-shirts so, for a moment, I wondered why I was sweating in the fire-proof suit and taking 3 extra minutes to get on track having to strap in to the harness, etc.

Then I remembered how much I like seeing my wife, my 5 years old son, and basic things like walking so I strapped in and went on track to go 220 km/h - racing or DE it is a dangerous sport/hobby so you'd be foolish to not minimize risk any where and any way you can.

I feel the same way; I have great brakes, great helmet, great suit, shoes and gloves- the HD is the missing piece. Prepare for the worst, but hope for the best.

A white t-shirt won't event prevent skin cancer.
