SFI 38.1 approved list & links
With some of the recent H&N restraint discussions, I just thought I'd put up a list of the devices which are (AFAIK) the 38.1 approved devices as of this date:
(usual disclaimer, no affiliations, yadayada...)
Hubbard-Downing HANS Device (the 800# gorilla of the H&N restraint world):
Leatt Brace - MotoR (yes, the toilet seat, $695, due out in about a week or two):
http://www.leatt-brace.com/themes/le...O_R_manual.pdf
LFT Technologies R3 Device (worn, not harness dependent, previously discussed):
http://www.safetysolutionsracing.com/?ID=27
Safety Solutions Hutchens-II Device (looks like a snake on your back):
http://www.safetysolutionsracing.com/?ID=22
Safety Solutions Hutchens Hybrid Device (worn, inbetween an X and II device)
http://www.safetysolutionsracing.com/?ID=14
Safety Solutions Hutchens Hybrid X Device (the kitchen sink of worn devices)
http://www.safetysolutionsracing.com/?ID=23
I don't recall the Hybrid X being discussed here before.
Interesting that seem to have gone to somewhat of an integrated foam collar scheme to protect against side impact forces/tension, test data shows it is superior to the HANS in this regard:

Again, not looking to start a H&N Jihad, just posting info for those who might be looking at 38.1 H&N restraints for the coming season.

Bringing this thread BTT; I'm looking at the hybrid over an R3 for the superior angular impact protection. The X just looks too bulky and restrictive, and I read it was designed for drag racing and the designer didn't see it being big in other forms of racing (presumably a result of limited head movement?).
So to my question: Does anyone use a Hybrid?

If someone were to pry my ISAAC away from me, I would probably give serious consideration to the Leatt Moto R and evaluate it (based simply on the performance of the Moto Kart/GPX in my son's accident this past February).
Yes, it looks like a toilet seat, but they may actually be onto something, not really sure yet.

Unless I'm misinterpreting it, the Leatt's test data isn't very impressive. I'm sure it is wonderful for a kart or motorcycle, but I think one should take full advantage of tethering the helmet to something when that option is available.
Here is the 0 degree test for Leatt: http://www.leatt-brace.com/av/r_0_b.jpg Take note of the tension numbers--pretty darn high! According to the Hybrid chart, the pass/fail for SFI cert (don't feel like looking it up) is around 3100N in tension. The Leatt is 2866N.
Here is the Leatt 30 degree test numbers: http://www.leatt-brace.com/av/r_30_b.jpg
Here is a link to the Hybrid's (http://www.safetysolutionsracing.com/?ID=14) test data, compare this to the Leatt: http://www.safetysolutionsracing.com...MoreAngles.pdf --Neck tension is around 700N for the Hybrid.
And also: http://www.safetysolutionsracing.com...HighImpact.pdf
PS: This isn't directed at anyone specific... The ISAAC may be great, but I don't care. I have to have something with a certification for NASA.
