These are nothing more than bilge pumps. The way most are made, they have to be submersed in water. How do you get the water outside the cooler

same as how a 911 has an external fuel pump while many (most?) have a pump in the tank.

2 thoughts.... You don't need/want the extra volume and accompying extra weight unless you're running too lite for a class. The 24 qt. runs really well 1/3 full and lasts for hours. Also, with the pump inside you contain any leaks if they occur...

I have the 16QT and mine doesn't really look like any of those pics.... It's not a complicated thing, the pump needs to work and it's an open ended system. I think they use a bunch of different pumps and none of them are very good quality.

Thanks, Mike. I'll keep the board posted after I speak with Schaeffer.

Rich Shaeffer is very helpful and my guess is he will want you to send your entire set-up (Cooler/Shirt/hoses) to him as he does mine. After Sean said his went back and returned with a new pump and still didn't work correctly I decided to mess with mine some more before going that route. High-end pumps are expensive, but so is everything else... so that's my next step (if it fails again at Lightning tomorrow).

This is one example - http://www.pumpbiz.com/products/inde...&series_id=406

I have flushed mine with water and alcohol a couple of times but it is not measurably better. I send an e-mail to Shafer.

Spoke with Schaeffer. They are asking me to send in the shirt, hoses and cooler so they can clean it. It seems as if it is common for these units to have these issues after sitting in the off-season, despite the alcohol solution I used. They are sending me some bottles of their maintenance solution. Nice people, and they promise a one-day turnaround.

I talked with them today and got some things to look into:
Check to make sure 12v and ground are not reversed
return flow should be 4 oz in 10 seconds
you can run a clorox solution thru to clean but make sure you flush it well
limited amount of air pressure to blow out the tubes but be careful you don't BLOW up the lines
if all else fails sent it back for them to look at!

Thanks, Sean. I hope it comes back better than yours. I will not be a happy camper if it doesn't.

Thanks, Mike. I appreciate the ideas. I am opposed to getting bleach anywhere near my all-black Recaro seats and my Nomex race suit. I'm going to try Schaeffer's maintenance solution. It might be the same stuff that Camelbak offers.

Weeeeelllll After only getting 1 oz per 10 seconds I decided to double check the polarity and lo and behold I had the connections reversed. I thought I had wired it so that could not happen!!! After getting it right 12v to the brown wire I have 3.5 to 4 oz per 10 seconds. I am going to flush it again and get the maintenance additive they recommend and use it!!!!! It never hurts to double check.

Thanks, Mike. I have my Cool Shirt wired in such a way that there is no way to connect it incorrectly.
