Default First Track day at NJMP - Lightning

Today we had the first track day at NJMP - Lightning course.

First, the NJMP folks are first rate professionals and pulled off an amazing day of fun filled track time. The tracks and facilities are simply outstanding. NJMP is likely to become one of the top track destinations...I think you can take that to the bank. I personally felt being part of history to be out on the very first participating lap on this track riding with my friend and coach Scott Leder.

The Lightning course while just under 2 miles is a technical track. I logged in ~ 100 laps today. It's a fun, fun track with a couple of blind crests, and a 15 degree banked "light bulb" turn leading onto the front straight.

I do have some video but the darn AVCHD file is impossible to reformat and post. But here are some pics from today's event.

Cheers!

pics and videos will never do these tracks and facilities any justice. you just have to go and experience it for yourself.

I was there today as well, although not as a driver, just checking the place out. It's a an unbelievable complex that will be first rate once all the infrastructure is complete.

I was surprised out how light the turnout was and there was certainly an wide assortment of cars on track. I'm almost positive there was a DP car running as well.

I'll be there with Shattenbaum in a couple of weeks and can't wait to log a few laps.

Not surprised as they got it right with VIR first. Two weeks and I'm on that track too.

Bobby
You were fortunate to be there on the opening day, and to have Scott in your right seat. I'll be there in two weeks with Schattenbaum and I hope to have Scott show me the line before I have to take students out. He's one of the best.

Here now for the second day. Lots of rain, but the radar suggests it will clear in another hour and I can see some blue sky to the south where the weather is coming from. Then we'll see what the drainage is like on the track! There was heavy rain Friday night and yesterday morning the catch basins that were dry earlier on Friday had a lot of water in them. The track was damp, but I did not see any standing water, so I hope it'll be as good today, too.

The facility is first rate. Classroom with a/c, three garage bays with sophisticated (NJ-required?) waste fluid management, the F1 karting facility on the other side of the paddock with Ovations concessions (had a big, good burger yesterday, with fries, for $7 and a coke for $3). The kart track is huge, and looks to be in operation. Paddock space is seeded with grass and there are lots of electrical hookups.

Bobby is right--you have to eperience this track to believe it. The track map is deceivingly open. The turns are much more technical than one would guess. There are two seriously blind turns (elevation changes) where the car is very light. The second of them reminds me a bit of the turn out of hammerhead at Shendandoah. The pavement is smooth, but there is a dip coming out of the lightbulb turn onto the front straight. The car is a bit loaded there still (that turn doesn't end as soon as one expects it to), so it can be noticeable.

I didn't take any video yesterday, but I plan to today--assuming the weather cooperates.

Country Inn by Carlson looks to be the best bet right now...
