It's the classic "death crouch"...weight's back and getting farther back, he is leading with his uphill ski.

It may be safe, but it's not smooth and it's not pretty.

Circuit:

Good skiers have always moved inside the arc, and big inclination angles are a key to getting the ski tipped over and bending. There are some remarkable pics in Witherall's book 'How the Racers ski" (1973) that demonstrate these skills on 'old' equipment - within a decade of the introduction of metal in skis (Head).

If you watch the best in the world these days, there is less attention paid to hand position and more emphasis on freedom of movement and relaxation.... And even with shaped skis, you still want to use primarily the downhill/outside ski to turn - can't cheat physics .

Agreed the best skiers are always smooth and relaxed, not rigid, same deal with racing, you don't see pro's clutching the wheel all tensed up, the motions are fluid and smooth

I was lurking through the 993 forums yesterday and they were blasting Greg Fishman for telling someone to use the search button! Some of those guys are tools!

Uh... no .

The picture was taken from downhill and outside the arc, so you have to think about vantage point.

The skis are tipped over about 60 degrees which requires some natural separation (inside ski ahead) to move the hip inside the arc.

The pic was taken a couple years ago for a ski boot testing article in a national ski magazine. If you look at the boots I'm wearing, you'll see why I'm grimacing .

These are several excellent books that help clarify a lot of concepts re. the biomechanics of skiing - worthwhile reading:

- The Athletic Skier, Witherell
- Skiing... An Art, A Technique, Joubert
- The Skier's Edge, Lemaster (also see www.ronlemaster.com)
- The Physics of Skiing - Skiing at Triple Point, Lind & Sanders

If you're in Albany, I'm happy to go skiing with you sometime (? Greek Peak).

At the risk of being a tool, I would suggest searching the 993 forum for "skiing" and "jdistefa". I'm going to hazard a guess that Matt knows more about skiing than your average person.

I'll be the first to admit that the 993 forum isn't what it used to be...it's evolved over time as various folks have moved on to other cars/lives (Mark, Phil, Viken, Greg...) and many of the discussions are far less technical than they used to be. The search button is apparently hidden to many because it doesn't seem to be used often.

Do I love my 993s? yes...and I love virtually every Porsche that was ever made. They are all beautiful and special in their own way.

Cheers to all.

+5 to all the books.

All the shots and video of me racing have my inside ski doing the same thing or even moreso since I generally overcommitted my weight to the downhill ski.

I'm gonna bet that Matt and I have a few mutual friends if he is boot testing for magazines.

The boots can't be any worse the the Rossi XK (???) yellow and black of the mid-90's. My shins still are screwed up and scarred from runnning those for just one year.

I don't ski around Albany if I can help it. Greek Peak is near Syracuse and is not much of a mountain.

I usually ski in NH (Wildcat, Tuckerman's if it's in season, Sunapee, Canon) where I occasionally instruct.

Ski in Vt quite a bit at Mad River and Stowe.
