Edit: Seems like you are on to something. The Aiptek one has 5V across pins 4 and 5 (which is not the USB standard) and the other ones have it across 1 and 5 (which is the standard, although 4 can be grounded to 5 it seems). So I guess you might not want to hook the Aiptek charger to your phone... I spliced the Aiptek mini-USB connector on to my cell phone charger and it works. Somewhat annoying, but at least there's a clean solution.

Let us know when you get it, and if it works in your car before you start hacking away at it
So you took the camera end of the Aiptek AC adaptor, and spliced it onto the power end of a cell phone car charger? Do I have that right?

Here are some pics of the mount. I have a 720P that will not turn on if the 12v/USB connectors are plugged in. The only charging method that allows me to run the camera at the same time as applying power is using the wall adaptor.

Correct. I used a car adapter for a motorola razor, and it works. But you need the electronics inside the cigarette plug to get 5V out. So you'll need a cigarette female plug to hardwire in, or cut apart the plug and solder in 2 wires.

Cool, on my way to Micro Center to pick up the cheapest car charger I can find.

Just make sure you get the +5V matched up. I used a multimeter to compare the output of the wall adapter to the output of the car adapter after I cut them up, but before I spliced them back together.

Got it done, & it works like a champ. I bought a car charger for a Blackberry. I [IMG]liked that one because it had a USB connector so I knew it would supply 5V, and the wires were substantial enough that I could solder them. Here's a pictorial. Sorry for the crappy pictures.

Here is the car charger I bought:

Clip the USB connector off the car charger and strip the wires:

Then clip the power supply off the Aiptek A-HD AC power converter

Position some head shrink tubing on the wires that are to be soldered prior to soldering, and also over the insulated cable. Then solder the stripped wires from the power end of the car charger and usb connector end of the AC power converter together:

Heat the shrink tubing that is over the soldered wires, and then the second shrink tubing over the insulated cable, and you're done:

Amazingly, the thing works. I now have power to my camera from the cigarette lighter outlet. No more dead camera batteries!

Looks like you made it long enough to put it in the back seat, of a suburban

I'm glad to have this problem resolved. I wonder what the next one will be...

Until I get my harness bar installed, I mount my camera on my rear window, so I need a long power cord. Glad to have this taken care of. The camera takes great video, but I've missed several sessions because the battery was dead.

That is good work guys. I may have to make one of those for my setup as well. This is the way it should be. Others do all the R&D and I get to just put it together and use it.

A trick someone taught me about making a nice, clean splice is to have equal amounts of wire showing (only need about 1/4") and to just push the two ends together (kind of like shuffling a deck of cards if you can visualize that). No twisting, just keep the normal shape. Solder that and shrink tube it ad you can barely tell it has been spliced. Not necessary and the old "twist and solder" works fine, but just passing on the knowledge..
