Default Best oil for racing?

Hey Everyone,

I just got a 951 race car and can't wait to get it on the track. But, I wanted to change out all of the fluids first. I talked with a friend who said that Mobil One 15 or 20 W 50 isn't recommended as the preferred oil any longer due to a change in it's formulation. Something about the red capped bottles being the good ones, that are older, versus the new gold caps that isn't as good.

The car was run on Mobil One ever since the engine rebuild.

I also posted this on the 944 turbo forum so it will be interesting to see the opinions.

What type of racing oil do you guys use?

I just heard that this subject has been discussed extensively before but I didn't find anything in the search so if someone can direct me to a thread, I'd really appreciate it.

Try searching "oil" and racing oil. This is one of the most talked about subjects. How fresh you keeo it is as imortant as any type and a oil analysis is a good idea.

Try these 2 from the 964 forum. Lots of good information.

Amsoil has my vote
tuff as nails then the heat builds up,
I have had pressure drops with a number of other oils, never with the 2000 series 20W50

For what it's worth.
I had been running the 15W-50 but after all the reading I've done I've decided to change to the 0W-40.
So far so good.
As was stated above how often you change your oil probably has as much to do as what you run.

Redline 10w40 has proved itself capable in both my 964 Cup and 944 NA. I have run them out to 10 hours and sent in oil tests to monitor the oil condition. The UOA's (used oil analysis) indicate t can go much longer than 10 hours. I use the "40" weights because: 1) It's the factory recommended viscosity and 2) I experienced lower oil temps with 40 weights. They take less energy to stir. Thinking of stirring honey with a spoon.

In the racecar every 8-10 sessions. It makes me feel better when I do it.

In DE car. Every 3000 miles.

Every 3-4 events, depending on conditions.

everyone knows my view. Same as yours.

hard to argue with 95 race days, going on 7 full racing seasons, and always seeing 5 bar, even at 260F oil temps!

+1, though I may change to their High Performance Motorcycle oil as it has even higher ZDDP additives and is designed for hotter running air-cooled motors.

I am not saying it is a problem, but keep in mind that motorcycles run wet clutches and motorcycle specific oils claim to have special additives for that aspect. I would make sure I understood what is in that oil before using it.

The flip side is that I do NOT run motorcycle specific oil in my R1 powered race car - I use Redline.

I think its pretty hard to argue with what works!

I think if its redline or Amsoil you are in pretty good shape. A bunch of the 928guys have lost engines on mobil 1. I tried it in one of my older 928 racers and the oil pressure light came on during a 100F degree track event on all slow turns. (ie less than 1 bar out of 5!) now, with amsoil, its pegged at 5 bar no matter the conditions.
