Ok. It sounds interesting.
It sounds like newer cars come with roller bearing cam shafts and don't need the increased Zinc, am I reading this correctly? If so, what kind of cam does the 964 have? What about the 996? I just changed the oil in the 964 and am due in the 996 and I'm trying to decide if I need this.
Since the 964 is a race car, I would think that's severe conditions so I'm really leaning towards buying this.
Thoughts??

Also, it sounds as if using this product on newer cars will definitely shorten the life of the catalytic converter and they are really recommended on older cars.
Interesting as many folks on the 996 forum are looking at getting this additive for their cars...may not be such a great idea.

There are some great threads on here and a lot of the other forums about the ZDDP issue.
Our recent one dealt with "Which Oil Do You Use?". Also, excellent reading in the 993 Forum and Racing and Driver Ed.

I'm putting in B-P racing oil today for this very reason!

964 and 996 run the cams in the aluminum housing with no bearing.

OK. I ordered a 6 pack. At least it will go in the 964 racr since it has no catalytic converter.

Pat, it depends on the oil you use. The newest blend of Mobil 1 15w-50 doesn't have enough zinc in it. Brad Penn 20w-50 on the other hand does. So if you're using the Brad Penn oil you won't need any additives. Or so the story goes.

I predict this thread will be at least 8 pages long

Now the big issue to me will be does it reduce the life of the catalytic converter as the manufacturer says. I guess it's easier for me to get the $20/5 qt Mobile 15/50 and just order this stuff to add.
Every time I think I've made a decision on oil and additives, another thread pops up.
On this subject I think ignorance is bliss...

You're talking about the 996, right? If so, my understanding is that you need not worry about ZDDP in that engine.

Can Brad Penn be picked up locally, usually? I'm in northern suburbs of Chicago. Or do most people order it online?

Yes, the 996. OK. I'll use the ZDDP in the 964 and continue with the 10w40 in the 996 w/o an additive.
Whoops
Shouldn't have mentioned oil type/weight. Could have several pages to thread.

I have a dealer here in Richmond that I get it from. The way I found my dealer was I called BP and figured out who the distributor in my area is. The distributor does not want to deal with you unless you want a whole pallet, so I asked them who the local retail dealers are. They gave me the name of a guy here in Richmond who is the Amsoil dealer and carries BP as a "value line" for racers.
