I've heard that before and I disagree.

The major and quicker correction you likely have to do is counter steering and if you don't shuffle but have arms turned, you have that much more leverage when you counter steer. If you need to turn more, it's slower process than correcting a sudden snap oversteer which at least I have experienced many times where as snap understeer not so much.

Finnster, doesn't it all depend on the car, the turn, the speed, etc.? In some situations, with my car, I need the leverage to complete the turn, while counter steering takes very little leverage as the car tends to want to return to center anyway.

As has been said many times, for me there are no absolutes. When I can keep my hands still, I do. When it helps me to move them, I do that.

anyway, just fixed my gear shift linkage the right way, so now i can shift and not worry about it coming out of gear or not being able to engage a gear normally.

I'm sure it depens but the "rule" that it's better to have hands always at 10-2 or 9-3 regardless of steering wheel's position IMO is bad.
I think it's better to have your hand position pointing where you're going that always pointing "straight".

I'm thinking more of a situation that just happens (i.e. when during a turn car suddenly slides) and in those situations IMO it's better to not shuffle or move hands.

If you have to shuffle your hands, it means you are driving: (1) too slowly; or (2) too fast.

The more I learn about driving, the more I realize that there are different ways to drive. Since I am not going to the track at the moment, I am trying to intake more than I output.

But I did mean what I said . . .


Newbies tend to shuffle steer because they are not driving fast enough to drive the rear of the car. More experienced drivers tend to shuffle when they are in a depends moment. But there are exceptions to every rule . . .

But the truth is that most people who "think" they are shuffle steering or "think" they "must" shuffle steer are wrong, just like many people who "think" they are trail braking a lot really do not. But that's not to say that there are not times when shuffle steering might be appropriate

I agree, and have never suggested or taught a "rule" about "always having the hands at 10-2 or 9-3 regardless of the wheel's position".

My point is simple....(for me) keep the hands set when you can, move them when it is advantageous.
