Default Race numbers

My RSA is 90% track and the occassional Saturday car. PCA DE's require participants to get their own numbers. I'd like your input as to purchasing a set of numbers.

1. Vinyl or magnetic? If I get vinyl and leave them on the car, am I'm begging the law to license check me every 2 miles? Will leaving the vinyl numbers on the car damage the paint? If magnetic, do you just use racer tape along the leading edge when you go to the track?

2. Where do you recommend purchasing numbers?

Thanks for your input.

PM DrJupeman for numbers his stuff is TOP NOTCH

I'd go permanent vinyl if I had the choice.

Magnetic would require you to tape the leading edge to keep it on.

As you can see from my avatar, I like Dr. Jupe's work too!

+ 3 for Dr. J's work. Just got my car out of his "studio" with new graphics. Pictures to follow soon.

I ran with magnetic numbers with no tape and it worked fine. There are different quality of magnetic backgrounds, so get the most magnetic.

Magnetic here (see avatar). I'm told my magnets don't require tape because they are the thicker magnetic backing, but I still tape the leading edge down as insurance. My car is white and I use white vinyl tape so you can't even see the tape unless you look closely. My car sees weekend street useage so the numbers need to come off easily. Even driving to the track with them on this weekend, I had a corvette and a WRX trying to goad me into street racing them. Having numbers on your car if you drive it on the street is just asking for constant attention that you probably don't want.

edit: here's a cropped shot of my number panel.

Most DEs only require 8 inch numbers, so I bought cheap numbers at a motorcycle shop. I stuck them on the side windows like in your avatar. Total cost was a couple of bucks each weekend. THis is good, because is you drive with other clubs you dont have a big investment in a number you may not be able to use.

You can also get a local graphics guy to cut a bunch of vinyl numbers out of his remnants for cheap. Sam logic as above, but they can be bigger and more 'racey'. Just use a spray on wax on the door and they come of pretty easily when done.

Even though they're not on my avatar, I got magnetic number plates from Dr Jupe. His are thinner than the ones I had previously, and stay on without having to tape the leading edge, even though I do.

Charlie (DrJupeman) does a great job - very good, very quick, and very reasonable. I've known many that just stick their magnetic numbers or roundels on and they don't come off even at 150, but I still put a small piece of tape on my magnetics just in case - takes about 1 minute before a DE.

Static cling - they stay on at least to 140, no tape necessary, and you just remove them and use them again. Magnetics would not work for me because the doors and hood of the GT3 are aluminum. I will pm you a photo if you wish to see close-ups. (Rennlist hasn't figured out I renewed my membership, so I can't post photos)

I think Mooty got some similar to mine - maybe he will add his opinion to this topic also.

One thing about the static - you really have to make sure the static back is clean, and where you are placing them on the car is also clean. Otherwise, it could be like taking sandpaper to your car's finish. And if there is a little dirt build up - you can watch the track's sweeper sweep it up at the end of the day....

There's nothing like hitting a magnetic number off someone else's car.

Here's the best answer I've ever found: Medium contact shelf paper. You get your assigned number. You print out a template using Word. You cut them out and stick them on. They stay on to at least 160mph. After the event you peel 'em off and throw them away. Each set of numbers works out to mere pennies.

And the contact paper comes in flower, striped, checked, and plaid patterns!

Just kidding! Good idea.

I had a whole number square come by my window at about 120MPH once, spinning like a frisbe.. saw it turn just past me and slice into the grass. Please tape your numbers.

I have an Idea, I prefer Vinal. You could get a piece of magnetic material in your cars color to cover up your numbers for your weekend drive since your car is 90% track and 10% street. The big down side to vinal to me is the ghosting it will cause if it is on for a long period of time. For my track car I don't care but a car with some street use this can be a real big problem.
