Default 944 cage - Any pics of an under dash bar while keeping HVAC?

Getting ready to take the car to the cage builder. We pulled the dash this weekend and I am trying to figure out how to go about the knee bar. Most of the other major decisions are made but I'm not super sure on this one.

I absolutely must keep the blower, as defrost is an absolute necessity here in the PNW. Most mornings when I get to the track it is still cool and damp and it is not uncommon to need to run the defrost in the mornings before a session. My car is also not watertight and so I frequently have a bit of condensation.

If I run the bar out too far I'm concerned about hitting my legs in any sort of incident. Anyone got any pics of this, or just some thoughts for me? Thanks!

First, calling it a knee bar is a bad idea, as I prefer to keep the dash bar as far from my knees/shins as possible in a crash.

If you can't fit it behind the dash and still keep the blower (it can usually be done on BMW's), have you considered fitting it just above the dash the where the dash and windshield meet?

That's exactly my concern Bryan. I want there to be no chance of my body and that bar ever meeting.

George - I almost searched through Bimmerforums.com for some pictures of your cage to use as an example.

You can see my bar in a few of these shots: http://www.izzyscustomcages.com/PorscheSpec944.html

It worked out pretty well with lots of clearance from my knees.

Actually, here's another 944 Spec car that was done by the same cage builder: http://www.izzyscustomcages.com/PorscheSpec944_2.html You can see the bar in question better on this car. Basically, it runs as tight as possible under the steering column.

no pics handy but I cut off the bottom half of my dash and mounted the bar right up next to the column.

Sure. Why not? Hell, that tube was not even required when I built my cage.

I wonder why you're questioning it. If I did not have to retain the heater box, I could have run it behind the dash as very nearly the same height. It will still prevent the inward collapse of the front support tubes.
