Remember Mazda is a sratch built tube frame race car as opposed to the
Show room GT3 we drive to work and back. A big advantage for voom voom.

OG....excellent point. They were actually commenting on that in the broadcast talking about how purpose built the RX8 was with nothing (except the shell) in common with the street car while the GT3 is very close to it's street going version.

Still, it blows to loose to a Mazda. Funny, I haven't had any trouble with the RX8's on the track

^^ Dell-

Just watch what the Mazda's put down for lap times when they come to our home track...probably 10 to 15 seconds faster than any street GT3
As was said in another thread it's hard to compete with a purpose built tube frame car.

Last time I checked the 997 GT3 Cup is only a couple years old. They seem to be pretty darn dominant. Can't win everything can you? Not bad to take 2 of the 3 podium spots!

Touche!
I'm still PO'd a P-car didn't pull it off. It hurt to watch the Mazda put that many laps on the rest of the field. Still think it would be interesting to see what a purpose built Cayman based car would do, but I guess that ain't going to happen.

Not unless we can convince one of the German teams campainging the Cayman to come over here and give it a go but PAG would probably castrate them...

A Cayman based car is not going to help. Unfortunately to be competitive they would need to go tube frame with zero compromise for street use.

They probably wouldn't allow Porsche to use a tube frame car in the GT class.

Unfortunately, the race was not lost pace wise, it was lost because of the radiators being clogged and the engine overheating. Both the 66 and 67 TRG cars were on the same lap when I woke up this morning, with 6-7 hours to go, and then all the sudden they started to overheat and wham, the race was over.

Thats what lost this race for them. How that bloody Mazda spun 3-4-5 times, but never heated and never had a hiccup reliability wise I don't know, but thats what Porsche needs to work on. The 66 car as Lally noted in the post race, didn't have a scratch on it, but they still lost because of reliability and THAT is what sucks in this whole deal.

Pace is the 997's problem in ALMS, not what happened today IMO.

What is the engine the Mazda is using? If the regular 240 HP motor, what is it up to for this purpose? Race organizers seem to make it easy for new marques to come in and win, and then get serious the next year. Remember that V8 BMW rocketship that won everything in sight but disappeared the next year because BMW reneged on its promise to homologate it?

They commented on the motor, said it cost $35K to build and can go almost a full season, only $8K for a full rebuild.
