Default How old is too old to partecipate in high performance driving?

I am 62 and have done a couple of audi events and now I am hooked

I would like to buy an older 911 and just take it to the track and learn on how to become a better driver, question is, am I too old?

Are my reflexes too far gone to be able to control such powerful machinery?

Your suggestions are greatly appreciated

Assuming that you are in good physical condition, you have many years of HPDE's ahead of you. In our Region we have several active participants, most in the advanced or instructor groups, who would likely refer to you as "kid"!

One of the chief instructors in my PCA region is in his late 60's and he is still one of the region's best drivers. I've had lots of students in their 60's and its never been a problem. If you're in good health I say go for it.

Nope.
Never too old unless you feel you are.

The guy on the far right is 62 and this picture was taken after our race. Next to him is his son.

He never misses races and always has fun. Not the fastest, but still has blast and will be racing for as long as he can and the doc allows it.

I know one racer that retired at 69. I'd bet you can DE into your 80's if you feel up to it.

Thanks for your responses, my goal is one day to be able to race, even if it is just once

I am not competitive or anything I just love the rush

How old is the oldest driver/racer you know?

A friend of mine (in his 60's) just put 700 hp in his TT and runs at the track all the time. Make sure you are in good shape, someone just passed recently from a heart attack while driving (of course this applies to long before 60's).

Your decision, of course, but unless you are concerned about your reflexes or eyesight, you are plenty young enough to start.
My 62 year old student this past Monday/Tuesday was brand new to DE (had 1 previous day) and was a very good driver. Learned fast, stayed within himself, and made constant progress. I was sad to see the event over.
I say go for it.
Please report back once you have been to the track. I'll bet you tell us 'should have done this long ago!'

We had two guys retire from DEs in their early 80s recently. Another in his mid 70s just bought a new 997 GT3 (instructor). Some guy named Newman is still driving at 81 IIRC.

I race ("race", as in "high-stress competitive environment") against a number of drivers who are older than you. I personally know several racers who are in their upper 70's who are still able to kick *** in competitive classes. About 8-10 years ago, the SCCA Formula Atlantic national champion (Formula Atlantic is the the most scary-fast thing in club racing land) was 78-year-old Dan Carpenter (granted, he is an ex-fighter pilot, but 78 is 78). And...there is that old fart/actor guy P.L. Newman who, at 83, can still hump a GT1 car around and win Regional races.

Compared to them, you're just a kid.

Newman is my inspiration !! Bought my first Porsche at 65 y/o. Have had two trips to PDE and found that I wasn't the oldest driver. This is my first full season of DE's. Now Austin is getting all my SSI (social security for you youngsters) checks at TRG.

Speaking of Viagra... get a GT3 and you won't need it.

Hope to see you on the track.

At a Mosport event that I attended in 03, a driver celebrated his 72nd B-day and he was pretty quick in his 924. I believe he only stopped track driving this year.
