After watching both races this weekend I started to wonder how the various classes in ALMS & Grand Am would stack up against eachother...
Some might be obvious but otheres are not, at least to me. Care to give your opinions ?
Do they actually run on the same tracks so actual times could be compared?

ALMS cars will be faster across the board: prototype to prototype (either ALMS class) and GT to GT (either ALMS class).
The Spyders were going flat out down 2 at Mosport, entering at 158mph = HOLY CRAP. Entry to turn 8 was at 170mph = YIKES! Flat out and upshifting down 4 seemed mild in comparison!

Dr. J. What were the relative speeds in your cup cars at Mosport? Knowing how fast you guys were racing, it helps put it in perspective. I shared an open track day with PTG and Bill Auberlien's ALMS BMW. That was pretty outrageous in itself.

I probably agree that class to class that ALMS classes are faster but are the DP's faster than the ALMS GT1's ?
And how much faster are the ALMS GT2's compared to the GA GT2's?
Inquiring minds want to know ...

I think you will find that in most cases the ALMS will be faster - LMP vs DP, and GT1/GT2 vs the GT categories in Grand Am (GT2 is the best comparison to GT I believe).
They both ran at Lime Rock and Mid Ohio this year so you can check lap times there for comparison (I believe all events were dry). ALMS will end at Laguna Seca so there will be good DP vs LMP comparison there as well.
Really wish that ALMS would run ViR and Watkins Glen, but there is some tie in to NASCAR (at least with WG) so no chance. It would be nice to see Grand Am at Road Atlanta as well...

Going into T2 was 113, slowing to 85 for the 1st apex, around 95mph at the 2nd apex and 104 at track out
T8 was 96 at around the first apex and 88 for the 2nd apex.

Damn Colin. At Summit, we were happy doing 1:25s in the heat (95 deg). The ALMS cars were doing 1:09s. They would not let us look at the data, but I think they hit 170mph on the front straight based on the gear shifts. The fastest turbo / cup I have seen at Summit did a 1:13. I think the Cups in your group were doing 1:20xx (Burger) at the club race.

After having driven/raced Mosport for the first time this year I was looking forward to seeing this race today. I came into the race late and the first corner I saw was in car of T8 from one of the Spyders. If he wasn't flat at turn-in he was pretty close to it. I couldn't believe it. Later in the broadcast they showed a g-load graphic from the Spyder through T8 and it was generating 2.5g's. That made me feel a little better.
The Star Mazda cars turn into T8 flat at about 137 mph.

After speaking with Hurley Haywood about the ALMS and Rolex GT Porsches I was told the ALMS series car are much more expensive to run.

I was at the race today and all the cars were braking (brakelights coming on)after the first apex at turn 2. I was very suprised as I thought I knew the fastest way around turn 2 and I had heard that they go flat out at 2 which was one of the reasons I attended. also I met Alan Mcnish on thursday and he told me that since they have a 6 speed they don't run full out in 2.

ALMS GT1
Grand Am DP
ALMS GT2
Grand Am GT
And since the LMP2 Spyder is something like $2.5M to buy I can see where the ALMS cars would be a wee tad more expensive to run...

Oh boy, you missed a great end in LMP1-2. The Audi went lame with a broken gear box with only 3 minutes to go getting past by the RS Spyder with only two laps to go. LMP1-Audi, LMP2-Porsche, GT2-Ferrari, Overall..... Porsche Spyder again. McNish was frustrated to say the least.
