I'm not saying I have ANY idea which is a better development drover, but that is a HUGE piece of the equation and over time can and will make a difference in the championship.
So, to answer your last question, it depends upon how good Hamilton is at development. A veteran drover may bring a huge piece of the equation.

Alonso is a quick driver, but his personality is fragile. He doesn't understand himself let alone a car, at any reflective level. He is immensely self-absorbed, out of this he can relate how the car's behaviour impacts upon himself. Don't forget that McLaren has Paffett and de la Rosa are excellent test drivers who are in the communication business.
Don't forget Hamilton has been on the McLaren team for 10 years, and part of that involved doing well at school. You don't have to be a qualified engineer to understand how systems work, just observant.

A devisive team member is worse than having a cuckoo in the nest, disaffection spreads like the plague.
Frankly, in other sports, Alonso would be dangerously close to being left on the bench to chill out.
The best thing I can say about him is that he has largely given up on the face fungus in the last couple of years.
Send him off to NASCAR, it seems to suit a certain type of dork.

If Alonso leaves Mclaren , He will end up at Ferrari. He is more important to the Big mac than you would think , Mclaren finally has a car after 3 yrs with the same testers in place , So Alonso leaves renault , Renault flops , jumps to Mclaren , the Big Mac is now good and it is not because of his contribution ...
To count out Alonso at this stage is very strange , man you even have him fired, , relegated to toyota, after beating schummie 2 yrs in a row , man this really makes Michael and ralf look overpaid , beaten by a Hack ...
Reality Alonso still set's the pace at the bIg Mac , Lewis and Alonso is now showing themselves to be the strongest Pr in F1 , Will Lewis pan out to be ahead of Alonso and win the WC . Yes, their is that strong possibility , will he do so again at Indy , yes , Alonso hates the place , but currently , Canada is the First race that he has bettered Alonso , Alonso Has consistently Out Q3 lewis , has more wins and more fastest laps , He has lost more points by making more errors , which is true and which is shown in the WC points , He is at Mclaren to produce , he took the chances ,the pressure for success is on his head , not lewis's Lewis on the other hand has kept his nose clean and doing what lewis has done his whole life and he now has the WC lead , but to act like the WC is over and Alonso will end up at toyota is way Premature and pretty off base , because Ferrari could use him right about now ........
What Alonso need's right now is an MS contract ... for his 3rd WC's

What McLaren needs is a driver who is not devisive
Teams do not need a somebody who whines about the bad treament he is getting. It is reasonable to expect a two time reigning world champion to act like a leader, not a mistake prone klutz given to hissy fits. Alonso behaves like a spoint child. If he continues as he is at present, he will drive the entire team away from him. Sadly, I expect more unfortunatel behaviour.

Hey,
I am no Alonso fan, but can the guy after one bad weekend and some whining? Naw, it is WAY to early for that. Alonso still won two WDC and Hamilton has what a few podiums and a win? Hamilton may become the second coming of Senna, but right now all he has is Potential. He could do this or could do that. Alonso has done quite a bit. Sure hey may be rattled, but lets see how this season turns out.

For example: McLaren introduced the new aerodynamic package front & rear first time for Monaco and those were also used in Canada.
Both Hamilton & Alonso were much stronger than Raikkonen & Massa in those two races.
Were Alonso & Hamilton all of a sudded so much better than Raikkonen and Massa because of the new aerodynamic parts (that were developed in wind tunnel with 0 input from drivers) or because they during testing told Mc what to do?
Whether the car understeers, oversteers or overall lacks grip (or whatever the problem is), it's hell of a lot easier to describe what the problem is than it is to fix it.
Biggest reason by far why Renault sucks and McLaren is so much better are the tyres & the broblems associated with them.

I'm not saying Alonso made the car and gave it to Mclaren , but he was brought in as the team leader and 2 times WC , it is not by luck Mclaren has 3 victories and at the moment a very fast car , all Parties involved has contributed to this ...
Look at this from Alonso position He is a spaniard in a british team with the second coming of the british as a teammate, FOr all of us to sit here and have the media shape Alonso comments is way off base, as we do not know the tone of his comment.... The real Answer will be at season's end ...

Alonso is a front runner, plain and simple. If he's in the lead (race or points) he's fine. His personality has proved that when the pressure is on, he lashes out at everyone. Last year it was Ferrari coming back on Renault and overtaking them in points. This year it's his own teammate applying the pressure. He has never had a strong teammate up until now.
Alonso's days at McLaren are numbered because he NEEDS to be the #1 driver. The equal driver thing is not suited for his personality.
Let's not forget, this is year 1. Next year, Hamilton will be more entrenched at McLaren and will without question, be the top driver. I've said it before, I'll say it again, Hamilton is the company man that will lead McLaren for the next decade. Alonso is the hired gun that is expendable.
I can see Alonso at Ferrari in a couple years, if he's the clear #1 driver with support from the #2 toward his WC asperations.

He probably expected to be the #1 (I know, McLaren doesn't have #1 or #2 or team orders) and now when it seems likely he may in fact NOT be #1, he whines.
He should go back to Renault.....I'm sure Flav will take him back
