Post What's a good time at Willow -- on street tires?

I'm going to be testing my car at big Willow with BFGoodrich G-Force T/A KD's, and I have no idea what I should be shooting for.

What's a good time there for a street tire?

In your car, probably a 1:38-40 would be a great time onstreet rubber. figure about 5 seconds a la for the difference between street rubber and DOT race rubber. figure, if you could run 1:33-34 ish, that would be good for a street car on hoosiers.

I've gotten 1:35 on A032Rs before. With this years treadwear-140 limit... we'll see... When are you testing Jack?

a032Rs are a couple of second off hoosiers as you have indicated , so, for 140 tread wear, what are we talking about ?

We did a 1:34 at Willow with a street 951 on stock rims and small Kumhos. A lightweight 911 with a 3.6 should be a low 30's car if driven well. Heck our little 914/6 2.0 ltr HSR car on Kumhos did a 1:33.

What Kumhos? DOT-legal R-compound or regular street?

Sidebar, Jack. Your "Duck-billed Platypus" link on your website made me spit beer on my monitor. Thanks!

Well, we ran on Saturday, and the times were pretty good. After a rollover incident early in the day, the organizers put a chicane in turn 8, which made our times not particularly relevant to previous times from the track. We also had troubles with our Hotlap timing system, and only got times for the first and last sessions of the day.

During the last session, we ran low 1:34's with the chicane in place. This is down from 1:37's in the first session, without the chicane -- but before we started tweaking the suspension. We were probably into the 33's with the chicane during the afternoon sessions, but our timer was on the blink.

Mark, were you there on Saturday? Your car looks familiar.

Jack:

Yes, I was and promptly left after lunch. I wasn't too happy with the event as a whole. I think there was a significant lack of safety rules and, quite frankly, felt unsafe out on the track with some of the people there.

However, I am glad I went because I really wanted to see your car in person. My wife, by the way, liked your car a lot. You've done good!

Mark,

Just my .02 cents. Safety is a number one priority with the POC. My first event, 3 years ago was with Open-Track, chalk board instruction, then out on the track at 125mph +. Scared the crap out of me knowing that I was on the track with 20-30 others not knowing what the hell they were doing. Come out to the short track with the POC, attend the school, participate in 4 events at the Streets, get your short track license,THEN drive in 6 events without incident, and THEN you can go out on the big track and feel safe with others who have done the same.
OK, everyone can blast me now, but I feel very strongly about safety first.
BTW, with the POC, a roll bar is required, along with at least a 2 layer Nomex driver's suit on the big track. FYI

Chicane in 8? That seems wierd... I was flat in 5th when I last ran there.

Yes, a chicane in turn 8 is interesting. You still take it pretty fast, but you've got to drive a completely different line, and you can't maintain the kind of speed that you normally do through 8.

Oddly, it allowed you to take 9 faster (which was the opposite of what they intended), and get a higher top speed on the straight. I actually bumped my rev limiter in 5th, which is 141 mph in my car. The downside is you've got to blow 8th in order to do it, which you would never choose to do under normal circumstances.

SpeedtrialUSA is generally a pretty safe group, in my experience, but it's nowhere near as diligent as the POC. Their intermediate and slow groups are a little wilder than I'd like to see.

Mark, did you introduce yourself to me at the event? I think you did, but I've got no face to attach, just the picture of the car. Thank your wife, in any case. She's got a broader mind about huge tails than my own wife does. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

That's a lotta tail, there.

Howard:

I am looking forward to my first STS's with POC April 12&13. I have the rollbar, harnesses, etc., so I am good to go w/ POC.

Jack:

I did. I was the big, tall guy with the SC hat.
As for the safety, there were times where slower cars were in front of me and actually weaved when I wanted to pass. Unfortunately, my attention went to "passing" instead of smoothness. When I realized this, I immediatly pulled into the pits and packed up. I should have pulled into the hot pit and asked for more space, but at that point, my head wasn't into it due to frustration and I really wanted to drive my own car home!

Oh well. Just curious, are you going to Thunderhill with Todd S. at the end of June?

Okay, that was you. Nice to meet you.

I actually am considering Todd's event in June. I drove at the TQ event with my older brother last summer. But it depends on whether I have the time to take the car out to where he lives, this year, in Chicago. If I can spare the time, he and I will do an event at Road America. If not, I might have him come out here again for Todd's event.

I've done one POC short track event, and really liked it. I plan on others, starting in the fall, but my car will never be competitive by their rulebook.
