Post Where to mount Hot Lap timer display? (RDE)

I’m about to buy a Hot Lap timer for my 993 and am trying to find a good place to mount the display. I saw some other set ups at this weekend’s Mid Ohio Potomac DE; some had the display mounted on the knee bar directly in front of the passenger airbag (don’t think too many instructors would appreciate it) while others had taken out the ashtray and plopped it on top of the center console (kind of hard to see.)

Will the DE powers-that-be let you run with some sort of suction cup windshield mount? This seems like the best place to monitor lapt imes with minimal distraction. If not, should I get the small display or normal display to fit on the console area?

I did a search but it didn’t help. As always, thanks in advance!

BTW, I just bought a used Trailex trailer with electric brakes and tire rack. It’s in great shape and a few years old. I plan on taking the tire rack off since I don’t have any extra wheels or tires. Thanks to everyone who helped me with their advice!

Mark,

I saw a number of them mounted in the space between the ashtray and the switches just forward of the shifter. What I couldn't tell is if it was a standard display or the compact display (at the time I didn't know there was an option).

This positioning allowed the driver to reach and reset if desired.

Hmmm, you've gotten a trick suspension, looking at where to mount a hot lap timer, bought a trailer and you don't think you're going to need a tire rack since you don't have extra set of wheels. My money says that you're going to be working on fitting TWO sets of extra wheels on that tire rack Remember, one set for practice, one set for qualifying/racing and one set for rain

Manny - I know myself well and can exhibit great self-control. I will not buy new wheels and tires, I will not buy new wheels and tires, I WILL not buy new wheels and tires....

So, stop putting The Thoughts in my head about *three* sets of wheels. Who do you think I am, YOU?

Again, thanks for your hospitality and use of your garage at Mid Ohio this weekend. Hope your hub woes have been solved.

As far as I recall locally (Florida) you cannot run a lap timer at DE's. I used to have the student disconnect and remove them.

Can't tell in your region. FYI, I installed mine where the radio used to be.

In DE's they are not called Lap Timers they are consistency meters. Just measuring consistency of laps not timing for scoring purposes.

Our local PCA (Golden Gate Region) allows timers during the practice sessions for time trial weekends. They are discouraged/not allowed only for the high speed driving school.

I've never had any trouble using mine at any events to date. I originally had mine mounted at the left "A" pillar on a mount I made to attach to my cage, just above the dash, but found it hindered my vision somewaht. Here's a picture of where I mounted mine. It's easy to look at when driving. Well...on straights anyway

In my car, we took an extra ashtray, and cut away most of it, and mounted a hotlap to the steel part. Now, I can snap the hotlap display in like you would an ashtray, and then put the stock ashtray back in for street driving.

I also hide my fire suppression trigger in the same space.

This picture isn't very good, but it gives you the idea:

Hi, guys,

Thanks for all of the great ideas and the pics, too. I think I'm going to mount the timer on the center console.
