Accident at Watkins Glen DE
I had to depart early from the Glen DE this weekend, and heard about an unfortunate accident in the combined blue/green session in Sunday PM group.
Can anyone please provide some info on what happened and most importantly the status of the driver and instructor, if any?
I have a bad feeling this is a green or blue student, just signed off by the instructor. I know from experience...
Thanks to the folks at Potomac PCA for a great event.

Chris:
The impact involved a 944T going up through the esses, during the first combined blue/green group right after lunch. I was riding in a Boxster S with a green student I inherited and we went by just after it happened. The car in question was sitting track right, facing counter-race against the armco just before the exit of the esses. It looked as if the intial impact occurred track left and that sent the car back accross the track. I never did hear the full story on what happened but it looked as if the student snapped the car to the left while heading up through the esses and hit the armco hard with the left front and pinballed back accross the track.
The driver was OK, but the car (in my opinion) was totalled. The roof buckled and the passenger door was out of alignment, along with massive damage to the front end. The student had been signed off.
A bummer on an otherwise great weekend.

Thank you for the reply. I am glad to see that there were no major injuries involved.
What a great track The Glen is, but definitely not for the faint of heart, or for those with more ***** than brains!

I was just at the Glen with Zone 1 on 6/29 - 6/30. How does one wipe out going through the esses? That whole back straight seems to be the safest part of the track.
Also, what is the blue group? Zone 1 has green, yellow, white, black, and red.

Blue appears to be your yellow and it is certainly possible to get light going through the esses. In this case is, it was double blue signed off for solo. Highly tweaked 944 Turbo S+. Carrera51's description sounds accurate and consistent with my post event discussion with the Ontario group.

Well obviously the turbo can pick up a lot more speed after turn 1 than I can with my n/a. After coming through turn 1 and straightening the car out I was shifting to 4th and keeping my foot on the floor all the way to the Bus Stop (inner loop)At the top of the esses I was going about 100mph. By the time I got to the braking zone at the Bus Stop my car reached about 115mph. Even going 90mph+ through the esses my car never felt light.
That Turbo S must have been really flying! I'm glad to hear the driver was not injured.

I know what you mean about foot on the floor, more power enabled me to get going a bit quicker through there, but the downside is where to shift to fifth -- the only place to shift (for me) was going over the underpass. Unfortunately, that put me into fifth early. If I did not shift there, I was at 6500 (or feathering) in fourth at track out. Despite that speed, the Turbo S will handily pull away and Carrera51 will pass me virtually anywhere.

Hmm, I noticed this year that I was severly lacking downforce coming into the first "S" and was having to feather. Last year with about 300pds more weight (how much I took out this winter) I was able go pedal to the metal just after turn 2. Transitioning to the left at the start of the "S" my car would go light and it was a bit unnerving. As soon as it settled I could floor it to the 400 reaching about 135ish. I shifted into 5th at the last apex cone on the right just as the back straigh started. Downshifted into 4th for the bus-stop, and could make it all the way to the uphill on boost in 4th if there was no passing.

You figured out who Carrera51 is? Nice to see you on this board!

951Racer:
I enjoyed running with you and the other guys in Red and Black at The Glen. It was my first outing at The Glen and I am sure to return.
I am not sure what my car is good for there, probably 2:06 or 07. I eventually saw a 2:10.50 but have major room for improvement in the esses.

Hi Chris.
It was a lot of fun running with you and the other blue GT-3 class 911. I was sharing 951Racer's car and went out with you fellas in the red group once. It was by far the most enjoyable session I drove all weekend.
That is a beautiful car you've got there! We were commenting on it all weekend.

Chris -- I remember your car, very nice, I was almost directly across the garage -- easier to find my white speed bump on the track. 2:10 -- Yikes!! I don't remember ever being lapped.
Carrera51 -- Yes I figured it out, easier here then on the track this past weekend. Imagine my surprise when your dad's car passed me like I was parked, but I was even more surprised when I passed your car -- some sort of three way musical chairs, I never knew what to expect.

Chris; First time at WG, I am impressed! People who have run that track for years would love to even get into the 2 and teens! If I don't see you until September (will be at VIR with Potomac), drive fast and take lots of chances!
