Unbelieveable how violent those crashes were at pace car speeds.

Reading the comments on the site indicate the Ferrari driver survived with serious burns.

Looks as if the pace car came out during the race and a hand full of cars blew through the white flag but thats a guess.

This person survived this crash with serious burns. He sued the race track for his damages due to their slow response in his rescue and resultant permanant disfigurement from his burns. He won the suit and damage reward was substantial.

If I remember correctly, this was from a race in Japan. The crash was the result of the pace car accelerating too quickly, then suddenly slowing. The guys in the back only saw a gap, and then the gap closed quickly which caused them to crash.

Its amazing this guy survived! Lucky for sure!

What I find hard to believe is how fast the flames appeared. The Porsche must have been leaking fuel. It almost looks like the fire started just before the cars hit.

it was a mid race caution pace car lap, where some in the back must have not gotten the word! the 911 or someone that hit him was trying to slow down and obviosly, that didnt work. who knows how the ferarri suddenly turned down to where the 911 was sitting awaiting to be ignited!

Mark, no one died. There is an aftermath video of them finally pulling the race driver from the car as they put out the fire a minute or so later. He did survive but with some serious burns and scaring.

This video has found its way to the boards a few times now. He did survive, do a search on Ferrari crash in Japan for the full article and aftermath.

It was amazing that he survived. I must be missing something about the response time though. If you check the video, the fire marshall was there with-in 40 seconds of impact. It took 15 seconds for the car to just stop moving, so he was actually there in 25 seconds, and had the fire out in 10 seconds. The driver endured the flames for 50 seconds at most. Aren't our 3 layer nomex suits good for 60 seconds of sustained flames? Seems like he did a pretty credible job to me.
