Mid Ohio Short Course
We ran the new 1.7-mile "Short Course" at Mid Ohio Monday with the Mid Ohio Region of the PCA (the Mid Ohio Driving School was using the keyhole "oval")
For those who've been there - with the short course you enter turn 1 as usual but at exit you have to stand on the brakes to scrub off enough speed for a decent entry into the "connector." The 180 degree turn is basically level (no camber) and opens-up as you enter the backstretch.
As I see it, the "Short Course" takes away turn 1, the chicane, keyhole, backstretch - and all the fun. I hated it.
Fortunately we ran the full course on day two.

That's too bad. A friend of mine raced his bike there recently and said that the keyhole was the best part!
A little OT, but are you going to go to the Taj trip or the dublin autoshow this weekend?

"6" is the traditional number identifier for the commander of a military unit. As for the Kitchen part - well, you can figure it out.
Several of the drivers mentioned the short course felt like a big autocross course.

Chipster, sorry I dropped the ball on the graphic aids. How did the classroom go?
I wonder if all the PCA schools that rent Mid-Oh know ahead of the time if they are getting the partial track. I'd hate to pay full price and only get 66%. How is the new surface holding up?

From an instructor point of view, I liked the short course. I got to spend many more laps helping my student who had never been there before learn his way through the technical back part of the course as opposed to spending so much time driving in a straight line up the hill and back down the back straight. It sure made Tuesday much more comfortable for both of us. Maybe running the short course in the morning for C and D students only would be more appropriate.

Dan - no problem, the classroom instruction went well. I took also some still shots of the track during the lunch-time parade laps. I was following a guy in a Carrera GT - he's demonstrating the "line" - pretty cool.
The Mid-O region knew well advance about the short course on the first day. I imagine the schedule is locked-in a year out - so any club should know if they have to run the short course when they book.
John - I didn't have a student but I imagine teaching the new line through 1-2 while trying to learn it was interesting.

I told my student, let's just try whatever you want. I tried several different lines and ended up double apexing. I was carrying alot more speed thru one so I was over at the outside/yellow curb standing on the brakes. My student was more in the middle of the track coming out of one and ended up driving the middle of the track until pinching down to a late apex.
