DE Cost..
In fun when a freind asked I figured out what it cost me per event so far including the cost of my car, trailer, truck, and per day expenses. I did my first DE in June 2005 at WGI in my then newly broken in 997S. I didn't include that car in the formula and came out with about $5500.00 per DE so far (about 15 days) ....
I'm going to tell my wife I need to sign up for about 30 this year to lower my unit cost!!

we used to say $1000/day. Includes weekend costs (food, hotel, tech, entry) NOT any perf modifications. Higher when you ship your car. as long as i don't go into debt, i don't really think about it.

I keep hearing - I could have retired by now if you hadn't started me in on DE!
And they say racing is expensive.
Note; $1k/day? Wow. Huge variance based on type of car and degreee of involvement, but this number would have scared me silly if I heard it back in my early days of DE.

Rules for happier living:
1) Don't look under the bed.
2) Never go to bed angry.
3) Under no circumstances should you total the receipts for a car project.
3a) Plausible deniability for the married: consider burning the receipts :-)
I think the concept of sunk costs is the single best thing I learned in business school

What I do track per event (via a spreadsheet) is the following:
- Track fees
- Hotel expenses
- Fuel costs
- Oil costs (@ $5/quart)
- Tire expenses
- And the all important "Other costs" column.
Note: I also do not count food costs, since when I'm not at the track, I still need to eat! And at work, we typically go out to eat at a fast food place, so the fud bill is similar...

I remember when I had the 944 turbo, my accountant asked who was "??" ( I left out the shop's name) He said you spent $XXX,XXX last year with them. I was shocked. I had no idea I spent that much. It nearly ended my track hobby. Now my accountant and I have an understanding, as long as I can afford it and pay the taxes, he never tells me how much I spend on my hobbies! But I did get a much more reliable car and only do DE's now...

Hmmm....I've done this computation before, but it never hurts to review it so I don't forget to check.
I break it into 3 categories:
Per weekend
Track car consumables:
Pro rated:
Tires (Kumho 710's-Scrubs) $100
Brake Pads (Wilwoods) 50
Brake Rotors 80
Brake Fluid 10
Oil 15
Diff, Tranny & P/S Fluids 10
Total car stuff 265
Travel:
Gas (300 miles) $ 75
Motel 150
Snack food 25
Total Travel 250
Total $515 (if I instruct)
Fees ~ 350 (If I don't instruct)
Total $865
So, it's either $515 or $865.
Wow! I hate doing these computations!

Whoops, didn't realize I responded to $1,000 per day - My expense is closer to $1,000 per event.

DE's are economical, well at least in my mind they are. A 2-day event for me is by far the most relaxing distraction I have found to date. So when compared to a two week vacation or say something as silly as offshore fishing (read 400 gals of fuel + bait + ++++) it quickly makes the case.
Now for the brave of heart offshore powerboat racing, thats expensive.
