Default Driver hydration systems ?

I am one of those "mouth breathers" (perpetual stuffy nose) that gets cotton mouth 4 laps into a race and I get totally dehydrated perspiring and am looking for a driver hydration system....anyone know of where to get one with a cooler or some other thermal protection? I was thinking of using my camelbak but it does not have thermal protection.

You can use your camelback. Add a good amount of crushed ice and it should do fine.

Thanks, Larry.....do I have to change my name to" Homer" to use this or do I have to move into a ""double-wide" or both?

BTW; funniest F ' ing thing I've seen on this site. thanks for the chuckle.

Hi Norm,

I simply use a drink bottle. It comes with a nice mount for the roll bar.

Here is a link -

It works pretty well, although the bite valve works average. I use it sometimes to help stay cool...

I have to put up my $0.02. That Longacre thing is a waste, it leaks, and the hose on the inside has fallen out more times than I can count. What I would use is this Camelbak "Unbottle" (seen in this link, can be picked up at most outdoors stores) http://www.worldclassgear.com/camelbak_unbottle.asp

You can keep it ice cold with, well, ice, and it has a valve so it won't leak when the valve is turned off. I'm going to be converting our hydration system to this very soon.

Thanks for the idea -

I have never tried the Camelback - but it does look interesting. Probably would also keep your chest cool if inside your suit.

For what it's worth, my longacre unit has never leaked and the internal hose has always stayed attached - however it is a big unit.

I might also try the Camelback myself to see if it is better...

I know a guy that made up a drink system with a thermos type cooler (kind you carry to the tennis court) with a pump and it used the windshield washer stalk to activate it. It was pretty slick.

That's an old bike racing trick. Fill a camelback with ice and remove the insulating padding between bladder and your body. On a hot day it reduces heart rate about 10 bpm....but there's no way you want this between your body and the seat in race car.

Leif997,
I use a Camelback. The Camelback itself is mounted on the back of my seat with the hose coming through the harness slot. I cut the hose in half which menat that half of the hose was connected to the bladder and the other half was "free". I then took the on/off valve and used it to reconnect the two lengths of hose created when I cut the tube in half. I then mounted the bite valve on the other end of the "free" hose. That part of the hose then is inserted through a hole in the front of my helmet. This allows me to turn the valve off and disconnect the hose from the camlelback with out having to take my helmet off. This is very useful when having to get out of the car during an enduro pitstop. After climbing back in the car, I just have to connect the hose from my helmet to the on/off valve which is connected to the Camelback. Been using this for two years without a problem.

Good luck.

Bicycle bottle & bicycle bottle 'cage' (around $10-15 at any bike store), 3-4' of clear vinyl 5/16"-3/8" hose ($2 at any hardware store), and a Camelback 'Bite valve' (optional...$5...if you want to drive back to the bicycle store).

Drill an appropriately sized hole in the top of the bottle, insert hose, wrap a zip tie around the inserted hose just below the bottle cap so it won't pull out. Screw or hose-clamp or safety-wire the 'cage' to your roll cage or anything else handy.

Warning: don't go with the cheap margarita mix...it gets too sticky and is a bitch to clean out of the hose. Use the good, frozen stuff like Bacardi. And use Gran Marnier instead of Triple Sec.

in a hot cabin, you want the insulated jacket camelback sells (for the hose). probably not an issue in rear engine cars, but the front engined 944's will want it.

when I first installed mine, the 2nd sip was like 130 degrees....

or remember to blow the excess back in the bottle...every time.
