I specifically remember Robert Kubica doing some pretty unhealthy regiment to keep under a certain weight but remember an engineer saying that they still want the driver as light as possible because it allows them to place ballast in areas fo the car that give it better balance.
Yes, they changed the rule a few years ago excluding driver's weight just because drivers were starving themselves.

BREAKING NEWS:

According to Motorsport.com

SERGIO PEREZ TO REMAIN WITH RED BULL AFTER CRUNCH F1 TALKS

In a Monday meeting Red Bull has decided against replacing Sergio Perez during the summer break

Totally insane, I bet either Yuki or Ricciardo would do better in that seat. Heck, Lawson might do better.

He gets along with Max and plays the doutiful number two driver. He just needs to work through the "yips" and get on with it. Plus doesn't he bring serious sponsor money with him.

He does, but a difference in one spot in constructors is $10M in year end points payout, IIRC.

He has been yipping for four months. He isn't going to get on with it. He is done. He can not keep pace with the top drivers anymore. This last race proved it.

The driver and their ballast seat is not part of the minimum weight of the car.
ok. Thanks for the clarification. Do they do this at the start of every race weekend? Maybe after FP1?

It's not about Max because Perez or anyone else that's been up against him have not even been close to his performance and it can no longer be said that Perez is a wingman to Max as he's completely adrift. A cost analysis must have been done by RBR. Perez has cost them 3.6m British Pounds in damage so far, the most on the F1 grid. Going from 1st to 2nd in the Constructors title will net 9m less. It's reported that Perez brings in 33m in sponsorship so it's still a positive cash flow but what does a company like RB that makes multi billions a year care about an extra 20m in sponsorship?

Most everyone talking about Perez mentions Red Bull in the conversation. Free advertising!
Plus.... The dickpix he has of Horner are really, really clear.

I just don’t agree that the money Perez brings in should keep him in his seat. . Does that mean he will be racing when he’s 80 and finishing last in every race just because he brings in money? He’s doing damage to Red Bull. I don’t want to drink an energy drink that only works on half a team.

Plus, all I can see is Lawson rotting away, like a cut apple sitting on your counter. Time’s a wasting.

This blows. I was fully expecting Perez to be canned this morning.

I don't think there's any explanation for Perez other than they're on pins & needles with Max at the moment. He's been spending quite a bit of time looking at the Mercs up the road. How could Horner not be paranoid about losing him? Dad's not happy, Max is petulant, as a race team and an organization, Mercedes-Benz isn't exactly a poor landing spot. Especially with new powertrain on deck.

Carlos and Williams... shame it's Carlos's best option, but good for Vowles & Williams. Albon & Sainz a pair worth rooting for.

Sorry if I missed, but believe Horner offered a very straightforward explanation for George's low weight -- too much tire wear, they didn't account for a 1 stop.

I don't know, but I'm blocking that technicality from memory. That was one of the best drives I've ever seen.

To continue the Crofty pinata, I was on the verge of punching the tv as he was wishcasting inversion with like 4 laps to go. His Hamilton fandom has to be toned down ffs.

F1 app is well worth the $85/year.
Can watch any of the practices/qualifying/races on demand.
Better analysis and calling than Sky. i/e no Crofty....
Can pull complete in car videos/calls.
Full pre and post race analysis.
Official driver press conferences.

Official:

BREAKING: Daniel Ricciardo will remain at RB after #F1’s summer break, with Red Bull electing against any driver changes for now.

Not good news for Lawson who is wasting away in the garage.
