7 years of experience as a professional corner worker speaking here, you NEVER leave station when track is hot, except to blue room break. (Even safer area than post)
YOU CANNOT COMMUNICATE WITH THE DRIVERS FROM THE TRACK SURFACE.
I am shocked to hear so many instances of workers being off post w cars on course. If confirmed, his life was in his own hands when he stepped off station especially w a hazard immediately prior to his stretch of track. This tragedy should have been avoided.
If an airborne car took him out of the station thats another story.

Tragic & sad. We all dismiss the danger that we are involved in. To minimize it we add safety to our vehicles and protocols such as track flagging. There will always be incidents on track and everyone needs to follow the procedures in place to minimize the risk to all parties. I have personally witnessed twice a driver exiting a vehicle on a hot track that was neither on fire or emergency assistance was not present. As drivers we need to attend the drivers meeting and understand the protocols. When I have an incident, I need to visually find the flag station tap the roof of my car or give a thumbs up that i am OK and wait until the emergency vehicle arrives.

Meatball flag was explained at drivers meeting. Every HPDE track day at Laguna Seca uses a meatball flag for sound. I've heard it at every driver's meeting. This particular track day the head flagger did the drivers meeting flag explanation.

As a former chief steward for a Porsche club DE I an really surprised by this accident. Everyone who goes on track as a corner worker, at least in our event, had to go through SCCA crash and burn school where basic track rules were taught. And I am doubly surprised it happened at Laguna Seca given the high level of competition at that track. It is hard to teach that decisions have consequences. We always said cars can be replaced but people cannot.

Out of respect for the deceased, their family, and others affected by this tragedy, I think we should not be speculating on what actually happened that led to the fatality.
Perhaps the details of what transpired will ultimately be revealed and perhaps there will be something to learn from it.

I agree with Coochas. As I read the account, did I get it right the oil was dumped on the out lap and it was not until the 2 lap through at speed this occurred? If that is the case, someone really missed an opportunity to call a halt or at least yellow flag until the spill could be cleaned. Could be why the worker was on track at the time. Either way the consequence is horrible.

It just seems that people in this thread are taking this as an opportunity to discuss other issues with track events, etc.
