As mentioned, you gotta to find what you really love doing. Life is so much better that way.

This Stanford commencement speech from Steve Jobs, I thought put it in great prospective.

MoneyBiz,

It is not my nature to be argumentative, but I believe mkell started this thread to seek genuine advice to succeed in life. I believe most people responded with the same spirit. I hope that you respect people who appreciate threads of this nature and provide input accordingly.

Thanks and that's all I have to say.

Imagine if all Docs specialized in Ortho. or similar paying surgical or nonsurgical fields to recoup what they feel is the right renumeration. We would really be SOL if we needed an Internist or our children a Pediatrician.

As both an Internist and Emergency Physician, I'm fortunate to know the difference. I work directly with all specialists in the ED in order to provide the best care for my patients and unfortunately there are alot of primadonnas out there (any field or career) that think they are more than what they really are just based on their annual income. <- As Mr. T would say, "I pitty the fool".

If Medicine is your calling, become the best Pediatrician or what ever specialist you want to be and don't worry, As physicians we will always have a great paying career (top 10% in USA) and respected anywhere in the world (best job security blanket IMHO). If you are in it only for the $$$, look elsewhere my friend.

Good Luck!

1. Work hard in high school and get accepted to a top college. I have two M.S. degrees but failed to obtain one from a TOP college. A mistake that I regret to this day.
2. Use your college degree to obtain an excellent job with a Fortune 500 company that is willing to invest in you (GE, P&G, etc.).
3. Learn as much as you can about RUNNING a busines (sales, marketing, accounting/finance)
4. Leave the company and go into business doing something you love utilizing the skills you picked up with the company
5. While in business be the best at what you do for your customers
6. Stay single (or at least childless) until your 35. When children suddenly appear in your life all plans go out the window (see point 9 below)
7. Surround yourself with good hard working people
8. Make lots of money in your business and buy the car of your dreams
9. Have children and discover what you thought was important and fun (the CGT) really doesn't matter any more.
10. Sell the CGT and enjoy what is important ... the family!
11. Never lose your sense of humor!

I think the only thing that is vital is getting a degree from a known school, in order to get to a top university for grad school. Go to a small school for the first yr or two, then transfer in your sophmore yr to a known school in order to get the diploma from that school. With that, you are able to go to a better school for grad school of which you should pursue immidiatly after your degree.
The first 2 yrs of university in this country all the same material anywhere you are from Harvard to a small 2000 student body college. So dont stress yourself out too much in you high school yrs, in trying to get to a top school, because really, they're easier ways to get to success. I know guys from Colombia University who are at jobs they hate... The further you go in life, the more this quote is true "its not what you know, its what you can prove" . That goes to the saying of 'its not what you know, its who you know' because whoever you know will assist you through the way. Its very important to make a network, especially if you'd like to do your own business. Networking is more important than education, because networking will establish the business and place people where they are strongest. Take this example into consideration: Microsoft and Mac.... As two different companies in the same field, they two operate slightly differently. Mac actually make the better product, but microsoft have more business, in which they make more as a company. Mac spend the time mastering what they do as if it were arithmatic, while microsoft focus on business, and leave the computer experts out of the business portion. In the end, Mac can produce better materials, but they lose because microsoft come up with a higher revenue. This goes with almost every aspect in getting started with your business... If you have the power to market, thats all you need.... Right out of high school, going to a top school only determines maybe 30% of your success - you have to know where you are going in life and what you want to do, and you want to become, and not become. With the right mindset you cant fail. We've all got our share of personal problems and life dilemas, but we've made it to where we are comfortable, comfortable enough to buy ourselves a treat such as a Porsche.
I'll tell you now, I was born and grew up in Italy and came to this country when i was 22. My family was not very rich at all, my father owned a restuarante. I basically came here with my sister, and we started from scratch, speaking no english.... I was able to attend NYU for grad school after 3 yrs of learning english. So, if you really want something...you will get it. you just need dedication and diligence, but most of all the mindset.

just my thoughts

very good thread

Well i know doctors in France are very good, some of the best in europe - as well as the UK and Scandinavia.

Med school overseas is most likely similar, but the research they do there is very deep... So i'd say they're at no disadvantage, if they came here...
