GTC3 rule change--please comment
My proposal for GTC3 is out for comment:
GTC3. Add GTC3 to rule T, which allows the GTC4 cars to use any Porsche provided exhaust system. Reasoning provided: The proponent suggested allowing alternative muffler replacements, citing the cost involved to replace one when it is damaged. The muffler on these cars is especially exposed to damage in rear end collisions. If there is a suitable Porsche part which will fit, that would be the preferred option, and one hopes the comment procedure will provide an answer there. If no such part is available, what aftermarket part or parts should be specified if this change is desired by car owners and is approved? Would this be an improvement over repairing damaged mufflers?
Comments may be sent to crrule@pca.org until October 1, 2012.
The cost of a 996 cup muffler is about $5,500.

I know of no suitable replacement Porsche part, but maybe someone else does? I'd like Fabspeed or similar fabrication company to be able to duplicate the 996 motorsports muffler--probably without cats. I have to believe it could be done for less money.

The 996 Cup is going on 13 years old now. Finding parts like mufflers that are often destroyed in minor incidents is getting tough, and expensive. Think about it, $5,500 is 9% of the value of an older cup. To pay that for a muffler is silly. The rule should change to anything that connects to the stock, un-modified headers and exits in the factory location should be acceptable.

When the PMNA RSR headers and mufflers became extremely expensive at over $14K, we decided to make our how headers and muffler for the 997 WC Cup cars. Our total cost was $6900.00.
We could do the same for 996 Cups in different variations.

This is an excellent suggestion for a rules change thanks for making it
I think that requiring stock headers/manifold and allowing any exhaust after that that exits in the original location would be the right thing. If you kept the stock headers I doubt there's any significant power to be made after them
All you c3 guys SEND IN A COMMENT 'cause Rlist comments don't count

I would like to see a lower cost, but equivalent performance alternative to the 996 cup muffler as well. $5,500 is silly, especially considering what our cars are worth. Fabspeed sells their street gt3 "supercup" exhaust for $1,095. That's a street car part, but that might be a ballpark cost of what could be made for us. Between GMG and Fabspeed, I'm sure someone would have an interest in making us a muffler. I will submit my comment. Thanks for making the proposal Chris.

I have sent my comments off to the Rules group at PCA. As a new owner (OK, HALF-owner) of an '01 996 Cup, I am amazed that Porsche chooses to extract mountainous sums for parts such as these mufflers. I know that this is a Porsche, and ownership comes with some serious money rat-holes, but this muffler situation is simply breathtaking.
James, I hope you guys at GMG or someone at Fabspeed or M&K or SOMEONE will step in here and provide a reasonably-priced alternative that will be legislated as legal by PCA.
I hope all the rest of you 996 Cup owners will submit your input to the Rules Committee quickly.

Just the muffler. I have not priced headers, but they are not so susceptible to damage as the muffler and the rear bumper cover. My intention is not to improve or change performance--just to have a less expensive option that is functionally equivalent. Different headers could be viewed as, and might really be, performance enhanciing, and I that is not my intention nor does it seem to me to be consistent with the GTC3 approach.

I am looking for a muffler as well. No need for a header replacement. Running a 2001 Cup.
