Jackson said the price went up this past Friday, of course, we had called on Thursday and they didn't return the call until Monday.... too late

Prices from Jackson in my above post are from yesterday, with no tax or shipping... here is my quote from Jackson in January:

MSPN 35400 24/64-18 tires are $470 each
MSPN 73883 27/68-18 tires are $495 each

State tax: $115.50
County tax: $38.60
Shipping: $40.00

Total cost to ship a set of tires would be $2,124.40

what is county tax. never heard of that. and clearly if the tires are shipped out of state, there can be no county there. I don't get it.

I thought you had to be registered in IMSA Challenge to get the new tires? As far as I know, the '11 tire is the same as the '12....

As far as I know that's correct. For 2012 IMSA requires a date stamp later than 2111 so these tires are previous to that date.....

I asked. Here is the (non)reply:

We are required to charge sales tax for all tire sales unless the customer has a tax exempt certificate in that state. We have to file and pay taxes in each state we ship to. Let me know if you have a tax exempt certificate you can send to me.

I just got volume 12.1 of PCA Club Racing News. The Chairman's column has a lot of interest to this topic. Including:

The GTC3, GTC4, and GTC5 classes will benefit the most from the JMG/Michelin sponsorship. They will be required to run Michelin race tires purchased from JMG [emphasis added]. They will also run windshield banners with the sponsors’ logo and wear driver’s suit patches from both JMG and Michelin.

I do not recall seeing elsewhere the obligation to buy from JMG.

The benefits noted in the column from the JMG sponsorship include
  • track support at 7 race and those that have at least 10 cup cars registered 2 weeks (4 weeks on west coast) in advance
  • at track free mounting and balancing (free shipping to track when JMG is not at the track)
  • tire contingency program
  • discounts for Michelin high performance street tires
  • technical support at track from JMG or by phone otherwise
  • checkered flag and hat for podium finishers
  • money to PCA to be used to improve scrutineering

Some of that I have seen, but not all. Lots of the benefit looks to flow to all PCA racers. Would it not have been fairer to add a few bucks for race registration for all racers rather than force these classes to buy tires from JMG at what seems to be $90/set more than the other Michelin distributor?

I know this is not the place to raise these issues, but it does seem odd to me. Anyone here know Bryan Henderson and can fill us in on how this makes good sense for the Club?

I believe that was only to get the new tires before the season opener at Sebring. The last 4 sets I've used for testing have been the new 2012 spec Yokohamas and I'm not registered for anything.

Personally, I can't tell a difference except that one of the fronts did this on it's inside edge:

Sales tax is sales tax. Many small vendors are able to not collect it on Internet or out of state sales. I am seeing more states and counties etc working to get their tax out of anyone they can. I think every state has a use tax law that requires you to pay a use tax on anything purchased from out of state. I have to submit use tax quarterly on everything I buy from vendors that don't collect it for my business expenses. Dang government blood suckers.

You are correct Peter. For 2012 Yoko had to change suppliers and they were forced to use a different mix of oils for their tires. Their goal was to maintain the performance level from 2011, but apparently it was harder to do than anticipated.

I personally did not notice a difference, although their engineers they will tell you that the new tires spike a bit later and a bit more "spiky" (the drop off is supposed to be more evident).

Again, I am not Ayrton Senna or Pat Long, to me it feels the same.

Vendors with a physical place of business in the jurisdiction must collect and remit sales tax. Purchasers that do not have sales tax collected by the vendor on a purchase are liable for a use tax at the same rate as the sales tax. Of course sales tax is easier for the government to collect than use tax on consumer purchases.

Why JMG collects sales tax is a bit of a mystery. Perhaps they view their regular attendance at tracks in many states constitutes a physical presence, but hard to believe that included NYC. Maybe they are just good people. In any event, we get to pay sales tax. I hope JMG remits it.

Just got an e-mail from JMG. Looks like there is track support scheduled only for 3 races? Will JMG add support once 10 GTC cars register?
