993 Cup Car vs. 964 Cup Car

993 Cup Car vs. 964 Cup Car
I have driven both (not mine) and enjoyed them both equally at open track events (never raced either). I now have an opportunity to buy one and there happen to be both available - what to do?!
The 964 cup is significantly cheaper even though both are well maintained. I found the 993 to be much better behaved on track - lighter, nimbler, less roll easier to catch etc.
Also, in this economic environment, what are going rates for these cars? I know a few years ago they were through the roof but they seem to have come down a lot.
Problem with all the the on line searches i do is that the prices are all over the place from 40s to 100 for the 964 cup and 50s to 150s for the 993.
Any help is appreciated.

964 more people to race against,993 much more collectible with like a total of 130? made. I would go for the 996/997 cup. More reliable, faster and cheaper to run and way more racers...my.01, likely not worth even that ...all great cars whatever you decide, good luck!

I believe they made similar numbers of each series, about 300. The 964 shares more common parts with the street car where the 993 has more race bits and things like cylinder heads are expensive and prone to failure. The 993 is a better driving car and overall faster with more race parts like true racing ABS found in the RSR and GT2, centerlock wheels, air jacks, etc. Both are great cars though.

993 all day long ( that is, if dont want the better, more balanced, 996 cup....)
If it is a true 993 factory racer, then the price will depend on history, condition and preperation.
here is one that i have seen for a while:

thanks guys, the 996 cup is - for me- a bit too pricey and requires bit more love.
I have had 964s and 993s for street and have turned them into track cars so it is a familar family.
I like the more sofisticated suspension on the 993 and its true, it is much more 'racey' in feel speed and response. my impression is also it is more bullet proof and the motor is an enduro with 120hours expected.

996 engines have seen those hours, plus many more.
Benefit of a 996 is that there is a much greater chance of someone having spare parts at the track compared to a 993.

But if racing, the 996 cup cant be beat in terms of purchase price and operating cost.
The 996 cup requires less "muscle" to get around a track becuase it is a better track car. TRG has told me this a couple of times.
The 996 cup is also more common and affordable car to purchase when compared to a 993 cup, and parts for a 996 cup are also easier to come by.
I was looking for a 993 cup before i realized the 996 cup was better race platform. I also realized a 993 cup isnt cheap or easy to find on the used market. So this squashed my 993 cup plan.
The 993 cup is a really cool car and i would love to have one, but if you have a budget for racing, the 996 cup is the better of the two to own.

The 993 cup seems to handle a lot better than the 964 cup, which looks awkward in slower turns. The 993 looks like it would be a lot more fun to drive, and it sounds better too which is important to me.
The 996 may be cheaper to buy and have more parts availability, but I don't see how it could be even close to the price of running an air cooled cup. The running costs of a wet cup are significantly higher, especially if you do any damage to the carbon fiber body parts.
Just get the one that you most desire

Drifting
I race with a guy that has a collection of 964 RS's he also owns a 993 RS but it's never at the track, he prefers' the 964. I think the main advantage of the 964 platform is it is a very simple, bulletproof race car maybe not the fastest but no slotch.

Is the 993 Cup truly lighter than the 964 or do you just feel that because it has stiffer springs? Mike kind of notes this with his 964s looking awkward in turns: they are too lightly sprung.
I'm a little (actually, very) confused by Glen's comment that 996/997 cars are "more reliable", at least when comparing to a 964 Cup.
I was interested in 993 Cups until I shied away from the cylinder head issue that Geoffrey alluded. So I went 964 Cup and enjoy beating 993 Cups in races as often as I can.
I'd also be curious to know if the 964 Cup you drove was a USA Cup or a true Euro Cup.....
