What camber limit would you suggest on the Yellows? 3.5 deg?

fryd, if you want to try some blues I have a good used set. Used them to set the PCA track record at NJMP then put new tires on and went slower.

I spoke with someone in tech at Michelin USA before I purchased the tires and he said the cups may not stand up to the weight load but the 27/65 18 and 30/65 18's I was planning on would work. He said it was a common tire for Vipers which were heavier than me. My grid weight is 3470 and I have a substantial amount of downforce added to the stock 996tt configuration. Besides, with AWD there are no good cup sizes for me in blues or yellows. The 68 rears run by many teams are a bit of a mis-match for the 64's on front in terms of differential in diameter which is important with AWD.

Mike - thank-you vm for the offer, but there's the small problem of the 500 miles and a border between us. Unless I can get you up to Mosport on May1! Otherwise, look forward to meeting (and racing with) you at WGI end of May.

Analog Mike,

Based on your review on another thread, and the assurance from their tech people that the tire will withstand the weight of my car, I have ordered a set of the Hoosiers to try at Road Atlanta end of the month. Looking forward to something that will build heat more quickly. The Michelins were terrible in that respect.

Dude - which ones did you order? A friend of mine sent me a link on these ones: https://www.hoosiertire.com/ecommerc...sp?SubCatID=17

Couldn't get your link to work but if it's the one to the take-offs from the race, none of the sizes work for me. I am all-wheel drive and front and rear diameters are critical. Ordered 265/645R18 in 80 cmpd. for front and 320/650R18 in 100 cmpd. for the rear. No other choices in compounds at this time.

The Grand Am Hoosier is a very hard tire and you won't like them. The new Hoosier cup is a much better tire.

In my 4 years of Cup experience the Michelin Blues were far superior to any other tire available. The Yellow were good too, but the Blues seemed to stay in the game longer.

As for camber, the IMSA frontrunners ran some massive neg. camber setups for qualfying back in 06' which resulted in some tire failures. Consequently, in 2007 IMSA went to maximum camber settings for individual tracks along with the introduction of the Blue tires. Also, the 997 cups apparently don't require as much neg camber as the 6-cups. YMMV....

I didn't buy a cup size but I assume the 80/100 is the same compound as the new cup cmpd. It is my understanding that at the present time there are only 2 compounds offered and the new cup sizes fall into that category. I was told by Appalachian that all were presently the same in terms of compounds. Just placed the order today. Do you know anything to the contrary? Tnx.

They don't look much cheaper than the Michelin Blues...

Fryd,

You should try to find "take-offs" in your area. Are there any IMSA Cup racers nearby? In So Cal we're lucky to have multiple sources of good take-offs (1-3 HC's) and many of us run them exclusively. We pay $350-400 per set which sure beats the hell out of spending close to $2k for practice tires...
