Default 944 Factory Cup Car

Hi,

I recently purchased a factory 944 Cup car. Although I notice that most of the posts here are for the later 911-based Cup cars, I hope it's okay to post here under "Porsche Cup Cars". Besides, some of the regular posters in this thread seem to have a good level of knowledge on Porsche factory race (production-based) cars.

Anyway, the car has been partially restored and was being set up for the 944 Cup series. My plan is to continue this route so I can occasionally race with similarly prepared cars. Ultimately, I would like to restore it to its livery/setup when raced in the Rothmans Challenge series in the 80's. This would hopefully allow me to participate in more vintage/tribute type events like Rennsport Reunion.

If anybody has any information on the series/cars and has any photos of the cars (especially interior shots), please let me know.

Also, I'm looking for a Recaro SPG with a Porsche crest. Apparently, this is the seat for that period - late 80's/early 90's.

Thanks!

Mclaudio,

I'm not confident you'll get much information regarding the 944 Cups on this forum. You're better off going to the 944 or Racing forum. I read this site daily to follow all the Cup stuff, the Cups with the engine in the rear.

You should also join Rennlist to support the forum that will eventually provide a plethora of the info you're searching for.

Good luck!

Does PCA have an advocate for 944's? Perhaps they could provide additional direction/assistance?

BTW, why would anyone put an engine any place other than behind the rear wheels ?

Do a search for 944 cup or rothmans cup. There is a very long thread about the number of cars and their current locations. There are a few guys who post to that thread that know everything about those cars.

Funny you mentioned rear engines. The first 7 Porsches I owned were 911s (early 911s, SC, 930, Carrera, 964, etc). My first race car was a 69 911T with an S spec engine followed by an SC race car. While I feel fortunate for having experienced such cars, I didn't really realize what I was missing until I started driving Formula Fords/Formula Mazdas and came to appreciate dynamically well-balanced cars. I understand that the 944s are very well-balanced so I'm looking forward to this car project.

Having said this, I also understand that the 996/997 chassis with the latest race suspension technology setup is pretty awesome as well. Someday perhaps...

The car is in the paint shop right now so I have no photos. Besides, the car is a roller with drivetrain partially installed at this point. FWIW, I also posted in the 944 Forum and one of the responses posted a bunch of 944 Cup photos.

I believe you are referring to the Turbo Cup thread. I have seen that thread and it refers to the turbo (951) cars and not the NA cars. I will, however, relook at the thread for potential source of posters with 944 Cup knowledge.

Thanks for the tip, Bill. I will look up Ron at PCA.

The well restored examples with the right documentation do command a premium. Actual value is hard to determine without knowing the condition. All the components noted indicate its an actual 944 Cup.

Did you ever contact Ron Tietjen? He's the "Man" for the 944 Cups.

If it's a 944 like in your avatar it's not what most people refer to as a 944 Cup. Isn't those cars called what the poster says, Porsche Challange? I didn't even know the was a series based on the regular 944. Was that a series for the US-market? Were they as modified as the turbo cup?

Regarding the seat: this company will sell you a Recaro seat with the correct Porsche crest. You'll find the info in their price list.
